General Summary:

The Vice President – Business Development is responsible for identifying, cultivating, recommending and executing on business development opportunities based on industry forces, emerging competition, and shifts in the local markets to support WellSpan’s mission, vision and growth agenda. The purpose of the Business Development function is to advance WellSpan’s growth agenda and partnership goals with focus in core/targeted impact areas.  The scope of WellSpan’s Business Development function includes the employer services division – Well at Work, independent physician alignment strategies including relationship management and acquisitions and other new business initiatives. 


1. Design, implement and oversee a systemic and integrated approach to business development that aligns with the organization’s value-based growth goals.  This includes assuring an effective process for proactively identifying, vetting, pursuing, and delivering new business opportunities and partnerships.  Organize opportunities against the priorities of the organization, based on the strategic value to be realized, relative to execution risk or resource outlay.

2. Provide leadership and consultation to WellSpan’s effort to 1) evaluate its diverse markets including identifying the needs of key customers; 2) play a leadership role in identifying and promoting the programs and services to enable WellSpan to respond to these identified needs and 3) play a lead role in the execution of these opportunities.

3. Oversees the development and execution of acquisition strategy including prospecting/lead generation, deal negotiation/structuring, financial analysis, deal execution and market research and analysis.  This includes validation and facilitation of the business rationale, financial pro formas and models related to acquisition opportunities and working with operations, legal and finance teams to determine organizational fit.

4. Develop appropriate structure to guide and support business development activities.  Create a framework that enhances and streamlines business development acumen and decision making providing greater structure and coordination for opportunity analysis, assessment, strategic context, due diligence and execution cycles. 

5. Provide direct strategic and operational leadership to WellSpan’s Well at Work offerings including employer services portfolio development, sales, and operations.

6. Provide leadership and guidance in identifying, assessing and developing strategic alliances and partnerships, which enhance patient care and quality and advance the system’s abilities to develop and implement programmatic initiatives.

7. Lead through influence and reputation in a highly matrixed environment to identify and cultivate relationships to understand needs and opportunities that drive future business development and stimulate key service line and product growth including working with service lines, hospital, and ambulatory services to create and fine tune development plans and processes.

8. Play a key role in the assessment and implementation of innovative business models that serve to drive growth and introduce new technologies, services, and processes to WellSpan.

9. Establish a reputation as a strategist capable of guiding system level leadership through a variety of complex business development initiatives.



 Minimum EducationUndergraduate and graduate degrees in business, healthcare management or related field.

 Minimum ExperienceTen years of progressive senior operational leadership experience in a large healthcare institution of similar size and complexity to WellSpan Health.  Experience in a multi-hospital system   is preferred.

Demonstrated success and expertise in broad strategic healthcare leadership. 

Extensive experience in strategic planning, mergers and acquisitions, business development, and decision support activities.
