Job Description:

Under the direction of the Senior Vice President-Chief Quality Officer, provides leadership, oversight, direction and general management of WellSpan’s Performance Improvement and Project Management departments. This position, along with their dyad partner, the Vice President-Clinical Performance Improvement, will lead WellSpan’s transformation to a Lean managed healthcare system.


  1. Promotes a culture of patient centeredness, waste reduction, patient and employee safety and error reduction through continuous process and quality improvements.
  2. Prioritizes projects and deployment of Performance Improvement and Project Management resources to drive clinical results, system standardization, and the elimination of waste.
  3. Leads and deploys effective resources from the Project Management office. Ensures alignment of the Project Management office with WellSpan’s goals, processes, and commitment to the methodologies of Lean management systems.
  4. Is the dyad partner of the Vice President of Clinical Performance Improvement. The dyad partnership expected to closely partners with WellSpan’s Regional leaders, Executive Summit, Senior Strategy team and the Vice President of Quality and Safety to achieve top decile outcomes, builds a system-based improvement and quality strategy and transforms our safety program to a leading proactive function focused on preventing errors and creating the safest possible care environment for our patients and team members.
  5. Works with system and regional leaders to lead the Portfolio Management Organization to evaluate improvement opportunities and prioritize projects to maximize impact across WellSpan and help the organization achieve our strategic plan.
  6. Facilitates alignment between performance improvement initiatives and the organization’s strategic plan. Directs the day-to-day execution of the strategies and tactics for Lean Management System implementation necessary to successfully improve the outcomes and results of the organization.
  7. Develops, establishes and implements goals, objectives and policies and procedures for department/service line/entity operation, and which guide and support the provision of the department/service line/entity's services.
  8. Partners with the PI leadership team and external consultants to develop and lead WellSpan’s clinical team’s quality and continuous improvement education and transition to a Lean Management System. Builds a core group of clinical and operational leaders trained in Lean management, capable of leading improvement work and training team members in Lean methodology in both clinical and support areas across WellSpan.
  9. Assists in the establishment of operational and clinical performance measurements and the monitoring of trends in key performance indicators to evaluate effectiveness, reliability, efficiency, etc. using available information systems data.
  10. Serves as an internal Lean expert to grow and develop WellSpan’s Lean Management system and capabilities including the use of 3P design strategies, Kaizen event planning and execution, performance monitoring and statistical analysis.


  • Minimum Experience:
    • 5 - 7 years
  • Minimum Education:
    • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in Health Profession field or Industrial or Management Engineering or related fields and a Master’s Degree (MBA preferred).
  • Minimum Field Of Expertise:
    • Experience with quality systems, advanced PI concepts including LEAN and Six Sigma methodology and progressive leadership experience in a healthcare organization
  • Required Certification:
    • LEAN Six Sigma certification
