General Summary

Provides laboratory services to meet the needs of patients performed in accordance with accepted standards and practices. Supervises personnel and coordinates functions and activities in assigned division. Functions at least 50% of time as a technical staff member.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Serves as the direct supervisor of the Transfusion Services evening shift staff.
  • Directs, supervises, and coordinates technical functions and activities in Transfusion Services.
  • Prepares work schedules, assigns personnel, evaluates work performance, and makes recommendations for personnel actions.
  • Maintains staff timecards.
  • Trains employees in day-to-day procedures.
  • Assists in developing department goals and objectives.
  • Participates in department specific and/or system-wide projects of varying scope and duration.
  • Investigates new products, equipment, techniques, methodologies. Performs validation and training as is appropriate.
  • Consults with medical staff and other health care providers on matters relating to laboratory and/or related services.
  • Participates in Quality Assessment Program on a regular and continuing basis.
  • Participates in regulatory inspection readiness and assessment.
  • Performs the duties of a medical technologist, including blood bank testing and procedures.

  • Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.
  • Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.
  • Requisitions laboratory supplies and maintains supply inventories.
  • Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree Required and
  • College Transcript As part of CAP requirements, copy of college diploma and transcript required upon hire. Required and
  • College Diploma As part of CAP requirements, copy of college diploma and transcript required upon hire. Required

Work Experience:

  • 2 years Medical technology or a related science. Required
  • 5 years Medical technology or a related science. Preferred and
  • Demonstrated leadership potential. Preferred

Licenses:

  • Certified Technologist in Blood Banking - ASCP Upon Hire Required or
  • Certified Diplomate in Laboratory Management - ASCP Upon Hire Required or
  • Certified Medical Laboratory Scientist - ASCP Upon Hire Required or
  • Certified Medical Laboratory Technician - ASCP Upon Hire Required or
  • Certified Medical Technologist - ASCP Upon Hire Required or
  • Certified Specialist in Blood Banking - ASCP Upon Hire Required or
  • Certified Medical Laboratory Scientist - AMT Upon Hire Required or
  • Certified Medical Laboratory Technician - AMT Upon Hire Required or
  • Medical Technologist - HEW Upon Hire Required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Thorough understanding of test theory, instrumentation, sources of test error and other factors.
