This is a remote position where the ideal candidate would be located in South Central Pennsylvania or in Northern Maryland, but exceptional candidates located outside of the service area may be considered.

Occasional travel required within WellSpan's geographic footprint.

 

Job Description:

Under the general supervision of the Senior Manager of Media Relations, The Senior Media Relations Specialist is apublic relations professional who proactively identifies media opportunities highlighting WellSpan’s mission, vision, values, clinical excellence, innovation and community impact. The Senior Media Relations Specialists proactively identifies media opportunities and needs related to strategic communications, corporate communications, executive communications, media and community relations, content strategy and social media. The Senior Media Relations Specialist contributes to an integrated, collaborative, data-driven Communications team that is known for high reliability and excellence in execution.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

Develop and cultivate working relationships with reporters, pitching story ideas and opportunities for coverage of engaging patient stories, innovative programs and services, and an organization that delivers on its mission of improving health, and our growth as a value-based organization.

Act as media intake for WellSpan Health, fielding local, regional, national and trade outlet requests in a timely manner, working against short deadlines at times and acting as spokesperson for the organization, protecting against reputational risk and advancing/enhancing strategic initiatives

Works collaboratively with the Communications Team and health system leaders to identify priorities and develop/implement annual plans

Plans the focus and techniques of assigned projects to meet the goals and objectives of the Communications Team’s programs; participates in assessing the quality and effectiveness of communication efforts and contributes ideas for future activities.

Continuously scans the internal and external environment, understands the organization’s major strategic and operating priorities and identifies relevant communications opportunities to support organizational change and engage employees, stakeholders and members of the community.

Develops and executes media relations activities including the development of news releases, talking points, op-eds, statements, story placement strategies, interview preparation materials, etc. Supports crisis and disaster planning and response as needed.

Responsible for photography and videography of system functions and other related activities.

Plans, coordinates and staffs news conferences and media interviews including logistics

 

Qualifications

Other combinations of formal education, training and experience may be considered.

Minimum Experience:

3 - 5 years of media relations experience 

Experience in successfully pitching and securing media in trade publications (Preferred) 

Background in Communications, Journalism or Public Relations, preferably with experience in a large, complex healthcare organization

Strong background in Media or Media Relations

 

Minimum Education:

Bachelor's Degree in communications, journalism, marketing or related field

 

Skills:

Proven ability to apply communications strategies to high-level organizational priorities; Critical thinking, superior journalistic writing and solid interpersonal skills.
