Job Description:

Under the general supervision of the department supervisor and the direct supervision of the Radiologist, performs patient assessment, patient management and selected clinical imaging procedures and otherwise assists the Radiologist in the diagnostic imaging environment. Performs routine and specialized diagnostic and technical radiographic procedures at an advanced skill level.


Duties and Responisbilities

  1. Reviews the patient’s medical record to verify the appropriateness of a specific exam or procedure and reports significant findings to the Radiologist.
  2. Interviews patient to obtain, verify or update medical history.
  3. Explains procedure to patient or significant others, including a description of the risks, benefits, alternatives and follow up. Patient must be able to communicate with the Radiologist if he/she requests or if any questions arise that cannot be appropriately answered by the Radiologist Assistant.
  4. Obtains informed consent. Patient must be able to communicate with the Radiologist if he/she requests or if any questions arise that cannot be appropriately answered by the Radiologist Assistant.
  5. Determines if patient has followed instructions in preparation for the exam (e.g., diet, premedications).
  6. Assesses risk factors that may contraindicate the procedure (e.g., health history, medications, pregnancy, psychological indicators, alternative medicines) Assessment must be reviewed by the Radiologist.
  7. Performs additional procedures the Radiologist deems appropriate.
  8. Positions and transfers patients safely and comfortably.
  9. Immobilizes patients as necessary and practices radiation safety procedures.
  10. Evaluates images for completeness and diagnostic quality. Recommends additional images as required (Applies to general radiography).
  11. Evaluates images for diagnostic utility and reports clinical observations to the Radiologist. (Applies to general radiography).
  12. Reviews imaging procedures, makes initial observations and communicates observations to the Radiologist only.
  13. Records previously communicated initial observations of imaging procedures according to approved protocols.
  14. Communicates Radiologist’s report to referring physician consistent with ACR Communication Guideline.
  15. Provides physician-prescribed post care instructions to patients.
  16. Documents procedure in appropriate record. Documents exceptions from established protocol or procedure.
  17. Attends meetings as required.
  18. Performs other related duties as identified.
  19. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient population. Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment. Provides direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s).
  20. Demonstrates a commitment to patient, visitor and staff by: complying with all applicable safety regulations; learning the impact of medical errors and methodology that will lead to reduction of errors; reporting actual and potential errors, as well as hazardous conditions; identifying opportunities to standardize processes and "error proof" systems that will lead to increased safety; and participating in safety education programs and root cause analyses as required.
  21. Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  22. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, inservice meetings, and workshops.
  23. Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.


  • Minimum Experience:
    • 3 - 5 years
    • Minimum Field of Expertise: At least 3 years as a Registered Radiologic Technologist with at least 1 year as a Registered Radiologist Assistant (will consider new graduates)
    • Required Certification/Registration: Registration and certification in radiography by ARRT; Registration and certification as a Radiologist Assistant by ARRT; ACLS certification
    • Req Course(s)/Training: Accredited Radiologist Assistant program; appropriate, on-going continuing education credits
  • Minimum Education:
    • Bachelors Degree
    • Preferred Education: Masters Degree
