Job Description:

Under the general supervision of the Medical Director-Precision Medicine Program and the WellSpan Service Line structure develops, implements and manages the Genetics and Precision Medicine Program system wide.


Duties and Responsibilities

  1. In collaboration with physician/APP, nursing, laboratory and office personnel, assumes responsibility for the development, implementation and management of a high quality genetics and precision medicine program.
  2. Serves as a clinical expert on all aspects of genetics care and genetic counseling to health care professionals, office personnel, patients, families and the community.
  3. Participates in the development, maintenance, implementation and evaluation of written care protocols based on established guidelines from the Genetics Society of America and American Society of Human Genetics, including physician orders, clinical pathways for expected standardized protocols and clinical practice guidelines.
  4. Ensures data is collected, reviewed and analyzed following established consensus statements. Develops and implements action plans accordingly based on outcomes data.
  5. Develops and implements the patient education process for all patients considering and undergoing genetic assessment with emphasis on family dynamics and structured care coordination.
  6. Serves on the genetic counseling and precision medicine steering committees. Assists the Medical Director, in preparing agenda and progress reports for the team. Identifies outcome measures that have not been met. Develops, implements and evaluates action plans for improvement with the team.
  7. Assists Medical Director and research team with clinical research, protocol development, biobank and relationships with labs and other external partners.
  8. Develops, implements, and maintains, and updates all required documentation for external certifications, as applicable, including required agreements with ancillary services, logbooks, licensure/board certifications, performance improvement activities written care protocols, continuing education credits for physicians and nurses on staff and organizational charts. Ensures that the System adheres to the standards and is prepared for any such site visits.
  9. In conjunction with the Medical Director, office leadership and the Service Line structure, gives input to a strategic plan that includes an assessment of the service population’s need for extended care. Explore the capacity to market services to meet the needs of the inherited disease patient population.
  10. Conducts genetic counseling with focus on excellence, appropriateness and excellent customer service.
  11. Develops, coordinates and participates in community awareness programs about inherited disease, genetic counseling, and relationship to inherited cardiovascular disease, oncologic, maternal/fetal medicine, and other medical related inherited disease.
  12. Gives input to the IT structure and storage of data in the electronic health record to optimize data mining and analysis activities.


  • Minimum Experience:
    • 3 - 5 years’ experience in genetic counseling with 2-3 years of preferably in CVS/oncology/MFM; leadership skills, operational experience, facilitator/chair of large meetings
  • Minimum Education:
    • Master’s Degree, Genetics Counseling (II – III)
  • Minimum Field Of Expertise:
    • Genetic counselor, CV/Oncology/MFM subspecialty education and knowledge preferred
  • Required Certification:
    • Registration and current license as genetic counselor in PA; board certified, as applicable
  • Physical Demands:
    • Frequent prolonged sitting
    • Occasionally lifts, positions, pushes and/or transfers patients
    • Lifts supplies/equipment
