Phlebotomy Supervisor - Outpatient Phlebotomy - Day

Hours: Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm

General Summary

Supervises personnel and oversees the work activities of specimen procurement, processing, technical and clerical duties of the laboratory.

Essential Functions:

  • Prepares work schedules, assigns personnel, evaluates work performance, and makes recommendations for personnel actions. Performs work of a similar nature.
  • Trains other employees in day-to-day procedures.
  • Organizes, directs, supervises, and performs activities in the laboratory section. Establishes routines and workflow patterns, performance standards, and staffing needs.
  • Supervises functions that may include registration, order entry, specimen procurement, specimen processing, specimen testing, answering telephones, typing/transcribing various materials, making and distributing photocopies, filing and maintaining all pathology and clinical laboratory files, and calling for maintenance and repair of equipment.
  • Participates in Quality Assessment Program on a regular and continuing basis.
  • Participates in department specific and/or system-wide projects of varying scope and duration.
  • Consults with medical staff and other health care providers on matters relating to laboratory and/or related services.
  • Performs the duties of a laboratory technician.

  • Demonstrates a commitment to patient, visitor and staff by: complying with all applicable safety regulations; learning the impact of medical errors and methodology that will lead to reduction of errors; reporting actual and potential errors, as well as hazardous conditions; identifying opportunities to standardize processes and "error proof" systems that will lead to increased safety; and participating in safety education programs and root cause analyses as required.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient population. Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment. Provides direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s).
  • Assists in developing budgets and departmental goals and objectives.
  • Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Participates in educational programs and in-service meetings.
  • Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.

Travel Requirements:

  • Estimated Amount: - Travel required. May make home visits.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED Required
  • Associates Degree Preferred

Work Experience:

  • 2 years Relevant experience. Required and
  • Supervisory experience. Required

Licenses:

  • Certified Histotechnician - ASCP within 1 year Preferred or
  • Certified Medical Laboratory Technician - ASCP within 1 year Preferred or
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician - ASCP within 1 year Preferred or
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician - ASPT within 1 year Preferred or
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician - NHA within 1 year Preferred or
  • Registered Phlebotomy Technician - AMT within 1 year Preferred

Courses and Training:

  • Completion of basic management skills courses. within 1 year Required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Computer skills.
