Rotation: Weekend / Holiday rotation

General Summary

Serves primarily as a lead technician, performing a variety of duties in specimen procurement, specimen processing, and other areas. Functions in on- and/or off-site service areas. May work any part of a 24-hour period. May be required to accept on-call responsibilities. May perform in-charge duties in the absence of immediate supervisor. Routinely obtains and disseminates information. May be required to accept on-call responsibilities.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for daily operations of assigned area.
  • Assists in selecting, training, orienting, and evaluating staff.
  • May document competency of employees and provide feedback to appropriate managers and/or supervisors regarding progress.
  • Transcribes orders and receives specimens into the laboratory, may process specimens, deliver specimens to testing locations, store specimens for future analysis and dispose of specimens.
  • May receive and transport supplies, equipment, reports and specimens between the laboratory and other health care locations.
  • Performs a variety of duties at progressively greater skill levels under varying degrees of supervision, records results. May operate point of care laboratory instruments.
  • Collects specimens as directed using appropriate or specified equipment for collecting and handling specimens.
  • Enters or retrieves data from established computer files.
  • Provides complete and accurate instructions to patients and other customers of the laboratory.
  • May review physician orders for supporting documentation.
  • Resolves billing problems and/or receives insurance updates.

Common Expectations:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient population. Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment. Provides direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s).
  • Demonstrates a commitment to patient, visitor and staff by: complying with all applicable safety regulations; learning the impact of medical errors and methodology that will lead to reduction of errors; reporting actual and potential errors, as well as hazardous conditions; identifying opportunities to standardize processes and "error proof" systems that will lead to increased safety; and participating in safety education programs and root cause analyses as required.
  • Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Maintains required records, reports, and statistics as directed.
  • Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.
  • May identify quality issues as they relate to educational, safety and laboratory function with regard to Support Services.
  • Reports safety concerns, violations and/or questions to the appropriate individual and may assist with the completion of reports, summaries, and inspections in order to assist with compliance safety related agencies. May conduct regularly scheduled fire drills and safety audits and maintain accurate and complete Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) libraries for area(s) of assignment.
  • Assists in care and maintenance of laboratory work area and furnishings/equipment.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED Required

Work Experience:

  • 2 years Relevant experience. Required

Licenses:

  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician - ASCP Upon Hire Preferred and
  • Basic Life Support Upon Hire Preferred

Courses and Training:

  • Medical Terminology. Upon Hire Preferred and
  • Phlebotomy Program. Upon Hire Preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Good communication and computer skills.
  • Performs component preparation and platelet apheresis.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
