Perioperative Nurse

Part-time (5 days in pay period. Varying start time between 0615 and 0800), day shift.

No weekends or holidays.  Scheduled coverage of late shift.

 

Job Description:

Under the general supervision of the Administrative Director, Perioperative Nurse provides patient care and professional nursing services inpre-, intra- and postoperative areas, normally in an outpatient setting. Assists physicians during operative proceduresand in providing care to patients. Instructs patients and their families in appropriate care.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Accountabilities:

  1. Provides general nursing care and personal care assistance to patients.
  2. Writes initial nursing histories, assesses patients' conditions and develops individual care plans for patients.
  3. Prepares the operating room for cases by setting up table, instruments and supplies according to type of case.
  4. Cleans and prepares rooms between procedures and after terminal cleaning. Monitors and restocks supplies.
  5. Prepares patients preoperatively for surgical procedures.
  6. Assists the surgical team during operative procedures.
  7. Maintains aseptic techniques; actively monitors situations which could lead to breaches in aseptic technique.
  8. Assists in maintaining correct count of instruments, sutures and sponges.
  9. Assists in patient care related activities such as starting IV solutions and inserting tubes.
  10. Administers postoperative care by monitoring status and observing for postoperative complications.
  11. Provides health care instruction/education to patient and family members.
  12. Performs a variety of nursing administrative duties.
  13. Prepares and maintains records of patient charges.
 

NonEssential Accountabilities:

  1. Ensures an adequate stock of supplies and proper functioning of equipment.
  2. Enters and/or retrieves data from established computer files using knowledge of various computer software applications.
  3. Performs other related duties as identified.
 

Common Expectations:

  1. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient
  2. population. Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment. Provides
  3. direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s).
  4. Demonstrates a commitment to patient, visitor and staff by: complying with all applicable safety regulations; learning the impact of medical errors and methodology that will lead to reduction of errors; reporting actual and potential errors, as well as hazardous conditions; identifying opportunities to standardize processes and "error proof" systems that will lead to increased safety; and participating in safety education programs and root cause analyses as required.
  5. Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control
  6. standards.
  7. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  8. Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement
  9. and innovation.
 

Qualifications

  • Minimum Experience:
    • 1 - 2 years
  • Minimum Education:
    • Associate's Degree
  • Minimum Field Of Expertise:
    • Medical/Surgical nursing
  • Required Certification:
    • Registration and current RN license in PA; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
