Executive Vice President and Chief Physician Executive

Position Overview

The Executive Vice President and Chief Physician Executive (CPE) serves as the senior physician executive leader of WellSpan Health. The CPE will align and engage providers through strategy, finance and clinical care operations. The CPE will lead as the President of WellSpan Medical Group (WMG), clinical head of the Service Lines, leader of population health and accountable care organizations, leader for all genomics and precision medicine strategies and be instrumental in setting the clinical, growth, and risk-based population strategies with the senior leadership team. The CPE will focus on a transformational leadership style with physician and clinical leadership across WellSpan to drive performance focused on innovative care models that reduce unwarranted variation and improve quality across the care continuum. The CPE will be accountable for both the clinical and financial performance of the clinical operations in collaboration with his/her dyad partner, the Chief Operating Officer. This leader will create the strategy and oversight for the Temple University Lewis Katz School of Medicine at WellSpan Health as well as all other medical and graduate medical education and the physician academic and residency relationships across the System.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Partner with the COO to create and execute growth strategies, operational plans, and clinical integration initiatives.
  • Clinical Transformation: Drive system-wide care redesign, evidence-based practice adoption, and high reliability medicine.
  • Population Health & Value-Based Care: Lead accountable care organizations and risk-based contracting strategies to deliver value-driven healthcare.
  • Physician Engagement & Workforce Development: Oversee recruitment, credentialing, contracting, appointments, and leadership development for physicians and advanced practice providers.
  • Academic & Research Partnerships: Provide oversight for medical education programs, residency relationships, and the Temple University Lewis Katz School of Medicine at WellSpan Health.
  • Quality & Safety: Collaborate with the Chief Quality Officer to achieve top-decile performance on national quality metrics and ensure patient safety across all care settings.
  • Innovation & Growth: Champion genomics, precision medicine, and new care delivery models to enhance patient experience and outcomes.
  • External Representation: Serve as a credible leader in statewide and regional initiatives, representing WellSpan in external forums and partnerships.

Qualifications

  • Licensed Medical Physician (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.)
  • In addition to M.D. and D.O., an advanced degree in Health Care Administration, Business Administration or a related field is preferred.
  • Ten or more years of experience as a senior physician leader in a complex, high performing healthcare system including medical groups, large integrated delivery systems, hospitals and/or other care delivery organizations.
  • Board certification in a recognized specialty approved by the American Medical Association or the American Osteopathic Association and completion of an appropriate residency program.
  • Working and applied knowledge in LEAN performance improvement methodology.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a dyad partnership and within a heavily matrixed and complex organization.
