Director-Nursing, Outpatient Surgery Center

Location: The Good Samaritan Hospital, Lebanon, PA
Schedule: Full Time

General Summary

Responsible for planning, organizing, staffing and directing the unit. This includes managing the operational aspects of the unit in a cost-effective manner and contributing to the Department and the Health System through the support of its philosophy, objectives and educational efforts.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides leadership and direction in a manner which reflects the health system's and the nursing department's philosophy and objectives.
  • Collaborates with ancillary support services to provide a safe, clean and secure environment for patients, staff and visitors.
  • Maintains close coordination with all departments to ensure continuity and collaboration of services.
  • Communicates effectively with other nurse managers to maintain quality nursing care within the health system.
  • Assists in developing policies and procedures specific to the Nursing Department; directs those to the appropriate committee for review and input.
  • Evaluates the quality of patient care by conducting patient rounds, patient interviews, direct staff observation and review of nursing documentation.
  • Directs the delivery of nursing care. and communicates unit problems and/or patient care related issues to the Administrative Director and/or the Vice President for Nursing.
  • Monitors the appropriateness of care. Collaborates with other health care staff and physicians to efficiently manage the patient's plan of care.
  • Responsible for recruitment, assignment, scheduling, development and evaluation of staff. Appropriately utilizes schedule and acuity to determine staffing levels.
  • Conducts regular meetings with staff. Assures that staff expectations are consistent with the unit goals and maintains visibility and communication with all staff.
  • Encourages staff participation in unit-based project development, nursing committees and educational offerings. Identifies educational needs of staff and develops a plan for meeting those needs in cooperation with the Education Department.
  • Assumes responsibility for safety and comfort of patients within the unit. Utilizes Surveys and Results to improve patient satisfaction. Provides input and standards in formulating patient care policies and procedures for the unit, department and organization; works with the medical staff to coordinate interoperative care.
  • Facilitates and monitors activities related to patient care and sets standards for accurate reporting and recording of patient's symptoms, reactions and progress. Organizes patient care and ensures continuity of care based upon knowledge of patient needs. Evaluates care through assessment, planning, intervention, re-evaluation, written documentation, observation and comparison to established standards.
  • Achieves positive results when accrediting and regulatory reviews are conducted. Knowledgeable of strategic plan and advocates the goals within the organization. Meets reporting requirements for DOH issues. Completes Event reports within time frame. - Unit is compliant and in a state of readiness for regulatory agencies.
  • Identifies continuous PI processes and operations; takes action and develops recommendations. - Works with other managers across multi-disciplinary areas on PI initiatives. Facilitates staff involvement in PI activities at the unit and department level. Participates in department or hospital wide projects when requested.
  • GSH Outpatient Surgery Center Specific Duties:
    • Coordinates with senior managers to develop action plans and short-term goals/objectives relating to the Surgical Services Department.
    • Keeps current with latest technology and trends within realm of surgery and directs patient care accordingly.
    • Facilitates communication between OPSC and other departments to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
    • Develops, reviews, and coordinates OPSC policies and procedures. Reviews and assures OPSC services are compliant with regulatory and professional standards.
    • Reviews and recommends OPSC services, needs (personnel, space, equipment and contracted services). Ensures OPSC is compliant and in a state of readiness for JCAHO/DOH.
    • Plans and schedules medical staff meetings as required.
    • Initiates and maintains appropriate contracts and agreements for outpatient surgery center.
    • Facilitates communication between OPSC and contracted services to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

  • Completes or assists with tasks that are not specifically outlined in their job description but are within their scope of practice or position.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelors Degree In Nursing (BSN) or related field, or plans to pursue Graduate of School of Nursing. Required
  • Masters Degree Preferred

Work Experience:

  • 3 years Recent OR nursing experience. Required
  • Medical/surgical background. Preferred

Licenses:

  • Licensed Registered Nurse Upon Hire Required or
  • Registered Nurse Multi State License Upon Hire Required and
  • Basic Life Support Upon Hire Required and
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Upon Hire Required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Evidence of strong leadership capabilities.
