Job Description

Under the general supervision of the Foreman, constructs, repairs and maintains door hardware and wooden structures such as furniture, equipment, partitions and other parts of hospital buildings using hand and power tools. Assists with general maintenance activities as directed.


Duties and Responisbilities

  1. Constructs and maintains building woodwork such as bins, counters, benches, stairs and doors.
  2. Repairs articles of furniture such as cabinets, chairs, storage fixtures and office equipment. Repairs loose or broken joints.
  3. Builds, repairs, and installs as directed within the capabilities of the trade.
  4. Repairs or replaces windows, doors, ceiling and floor tile plus various wooden wall coverings.
  5. Replaces door or window glass.
  6. Installs lock and passage sets and panic door hardware and repairs same. Maintains inventory and log of locks and
  7. Requisitions lumber, hardware, and other supplies and equipment; maintains inventory of carpentry tools and equipment.
  8. Works from blueprints and drawings in constructing and repairing woodwork.
  9. Keeps work areas orderly, clean and safe. Ensures proper care in the use of equipment and supplies.
  10. Performs a variety of general maintenance, repair, overhaul, and construction duties in all hospital buildings.
  11. Performs snow removal for extended periods of time using hand shovel, snow blower, walk behind salt spreader, small tractor or truck with plow. Requires frequent bending and lifting up to 50 lbs, extended exposure to cold and wind conditions.
  12. Maintains records on required and completed work.
  13. Attends meetings as required.
  14. Performs other related duties as identified.


  • Minimum Experience:
    • 1-2 years
    • Four year carpentry apprenticeship
  • Minimum Education:
    • Post High School Vocational/Specialized Training
  • Preferred Courses:
    • Locksmithing
  • Physical Demands:
    • Heavy physical effort (lift/carry 26 to 50 lbs)
    • Frequent prolonged standing/walking
    • Lifts supplies/equipment
    • Manual dexterity and mobility
    • Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching
