General Summary:

Under general supervision, develops, implements and coordinates clinical exercise programs and administers diagnostic medical tests under a physician's supervision. Assists in the development and oversight of exercise programs in cardiac, pulmonary and metabolic patients. Performs testing and interpretation of non-invasive cardiac/pulmonary exercise tests, musculoskeletal endurance, strength and flexibility, body composition and analysis assessment.


Duties and Responsibilities:

The following are essential job accountabilities:

1 Possesses the knowledge and skills level to administer treadmill and pharmacological protocols for stress tests which includes, but is not limited to: monitor, record and interpret EKG tracings for diagnostic purposes; determine appropriate testing protocol; recognize presence of permanent pace maker; calculate and record diagnostic parameters; monitor and evaluate patient tolerance to test including chest pain; and submit test to physician.

2 Responsible for patient safety including recognizing cardiac arrhythmias and responding according to emergency protocols utilizing Basic Life Saving skills and obtaining emergency medical equipment.

3 Provides care to patient. Obtains history, assesses patient condition, collects and interprets clinical information for appropriateness for ordered test, explains procedure, obtains consent and provides personal care/hygiene.

4 Performs electrocardiograms. Possesses advanced knowledge of rhythm recognition.

5 Maintains operational knowledge of Noninvasive Cardiology/fitness equipment with ability to troubleshoot this equipment.

6 Possesses competency in the use of equipment for treatment and deriving exercise and lifestyle improvement strategies.

 7 Demonstrates competency in exercise protocol selection and risk stratification classification in patient assessment and rehabilitation.

8 Possesses the ability to perform technical skills, which may include any of the following: venipuncture, blood pressure monitoring at rest and exercise, skinfold assessments, circumference measures, advanced EKG interpretation and monitoring, pulse oximetry and metabolic measures.

9 Demonstrates advanced knowledge of exercise prescription, exercise counseling and exercise education and setting of exercise goals that will best serve the needs of the patient.

10 Demonstrates a commitment to patient, visitor and staff by: complying with all applicable safety regulations; learning the impact of medical errors and methodology that will lead to reduction of errors; reporting actual and potential errors, as well as hazardous conditions; identifying opportunities to standardize processes and "error proof" systems that will lead to increased safety; and participating in safety education programs and root cause analyses as required.

11 Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards, cleans equipment.

12 Provides data evaluation of outcomes in clinical exercise programs to identify the most efficacious, safe and cost effective service delivery methods provided to patients that will deliver the best outcomes for the lowest price.

13 Uses exercise education, exercise prescription and exercise counseling techniques to facilitate increased habitual physical activity and adoption of other health behaviors that decrease the risk of development or recurrence risk of chronic disease or health-related injury.

14 Applies basic first aid, cardiac life support and certain aspects of advanced cardiac life support, as needed.

15 Creates and/or modifies policies regarding the delivery of patient care and services related to exercise testing, prescription and supervision.

16 Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.

Required Skills


High school diploma or G.E.D.

Successful completion of Basic EKG course for cardiac arrhythmias or equivalent BLS
