General Summary

Provides basic on-site athletic training services for various organizations including high school, college, and recreational teams during regular season, tournament and post-season athletic events. Clearly demonstrates the ability to perform prevention, assessment, treatment (including first aid), reconditioning and general rehabilitation of athletic injuries as set forth by the NATA Board of Certification (BOC) and WellSpan Health.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Demonstrates proper taping, strapping, bracing and fitting of athletic equipment.
  • Carries out all prescribed treatments and recommendations made by the team/program/event physician and communicates appropriately with the rest of the interdisciplinary care team.
  • Maintains relationships with referring physicians, businesses, schools, coaches and other referral sources within local community.
  • Utilizes appropriate, sound and up-to-date clinical techniques to effectively assess and treat athletic injuries.
  • Maintains BOC and CPR certification in accordance with those respective institutions.
  • Covers assigned pre-season physicals, sports games or matches and related events and supervises onsite treatments and programs of reconditioning for injured athletes under the supervision of the sports medicine program coordinator and medical director.
  • Records athletic injuries and treatments as rendered and maintains the records in accordance with the district/organization/Wellspan Rehabilitation guidelines for which service is provided.
  • Assists the examining physician in implementation of pre-participation examinations for prospective athletes and measures patient's/student's progress and level of function in a manner appropriate for specific age groups. Continues to work cooperatively with physicians and other care team members (including parent/guardian) by advising of any change in athlete's progress through an ongoing status report.
  • Assists physical therapists in the treatment of patients with sports or orthopedic conditions referred for rehabilitation. The physical therapist will evaluate the patient, set goals and monitor progress. The athletic trainer will assist with the implementation of the treatment plan.

Common Expectations:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient population. Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment. Provides direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s).
  • Participates in off-site health screens and fitness lectures and educational programming.
  • Promotes and adheres to the values and behaviors outlined in the code of conduct at all times
  • Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.
  • Actively participates in departmental performance/quality improvement program(s) to achieve measurable and sustained levels of improvement ensure quality outcomes and customer experience for the athlete/school/organization.
  • Maintains, orders, and organizes everyday supplies necessary to deliver proper evidence based treatment of athletes within the guidelines of the department

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelors Degree In health related field. Required

Work Experience:

  • 1 year Relevant experience. Required or
  • Entry-level graduates with NATA BOC certification will be considered. Required

Licenses:

  • Licensed Athletic Trainer Upon Hire Required and
  • Basic Life Support Upon Hire Required

Courses and Training:

  • Graduate of a National Athletic Trainer's Association accredited program or graduate of an athletic trainer internship program. Upon Hire Required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to work with patient of a variety of ages and diagnosis with sensitivity and skill.
  • Ability to apply athletic training practices and understand and implement hospital, school and organizational policies and procedures.
