Acupuncturist - Center Mind Body Health

Location: York Hospital, York, PA
Schedule: PRN/Per Diem

General Summary

Performs acupuncture therapy to patients and clients according to the principles and practices of acupuncture and works collaboratively with other providers and department personnel to care for the patient/client. Acupuncture is a specialist area of holistic medicine drawing its origins from the Chinese philosophy of Qi. Acupuncture focuses on manipulating and maintaining the balance of "life energy" in the body with the insertion of needles into various acupuncture points. The positioning of these needles is dependent of the type of illness or health condition that needs to be treated.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Develops, implements & coordinates acupuncture therapy and treatment plans with patients/clients. Conducts a detailed diagnosis and collects data on a patient's life style, diet, health history, and symptoms before developing such treatment plan.
  • Provides education and information to patients, clients, employers, community groups on the benefits of acupuncture and other holistic medicine services available.
  • Provides accurate application of acupuncture to treat of variety of emotional, mental and physical disorders or to maintain general well-being and health.
  • Practices clean needle techniques and counts needles per policy.
  • Provides recognized and approved techniques using equipment and products only if the acupuncturist has the necessary knowledge, training, or skill to competently execute the technique.
  • When treating minor patients/clients, follows System policies and procedures of requiring that a parent or guardian be present in the treatment room during a procedure.
  • Participates in marketing and community events as requested.
  • Participates in programs across the continuum of the System to provide patients/clients access to the beneficial elements of holistic medicine services to promote overall healing and good health.
  • Provides treatments only where there is an expectation that it will be advantageous to the patient/ client and will refer to an appropriate health care professional when indicated in the interest of the patient.
  • Maintains patient/client records, as required by profession, with accurate and timely documentation in the health record per System/Department policy.
  • Maintains current licensure in the State of Pennsylvania and adheres to all standards of professional conduct in keeping license current, including continuing education hours and maintenance of certificates of completion. Display license, with expiration date in a conspicuous location.
  • Maintains patient/client dignity at all times.

  • Follows all System policies and procedures and complies with Provider Code of Conduct.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.
  • Provides outstanding service to all patients/clients, fosters teamwork; practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation. Works with Practice Manager and support staff to resolve any customer service issues that may arise.
  • Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelors Degree Required

Work Experience:

  • 3 years Relevant experience. Required

Licenses:

  • Licensed Acupuncturist Upon Hire Required
  • Basic Life Support Upon Hire Preferred

Courses and Training:

  • Has successfully completed an acupuncture educational program which includes a course in needle sterilization techniques. Upon Hire Required and
  • Has obtained a passing grade on an acupuncture examination or has been certified by NCCAOM. Upon Hire Required and
  • If the examination was not taken in English, but is otherwise acceptable and a passing score was secured, the Board will accept the examination result if the applicant has also secured a score of 550 on the test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Upon Hire Required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Acupuncturists shall register biennially and submit the appropriate registration fee to engage in the practice of acupuncture for the biennial period.
  • Practice responsibilities of acupuncturist who is not medical doctor: * May treat the patient's symptoms without the condition being diagnosed by a physician, dentist or podiatrist for 60 calendar days from the date of the first treatment.* May treat the patient's symptoms beyond 60 calendar days from the date of first treatment if the patient has obtained an examination and diagnosis from a physician, dentist or podiatrist.* Shall promptly refer the patient to a physician, dentist or podiatrist, as appropriate to the patient's condition, if the acupuncturist determines that further acupuncture treatment is contraindicated for the patient or determines that the patient's symptoms have worsened.* Shall consult with the patient's physician, dentist, podiatrist or other health care practitioner upon request of the patient.* Shall cooperate with the patient's physician, dentist or podiatrist in regard to the coordination of the patient's care, and comply with restrictions or conditions as directed by the physician, dentist or podiatrist.* May not diagnose a physical or mental ailment or condition or prescribe or dispense a drug. * This provision does not prohibit the use of diagnostic billing codes for billing or reimbursement purposes.* An acupuncturist may practice acupuncture and use supplemental techniques but may not use herbal therapy, unless board certified in the practice of oriental medicine.
