At WellSpan, belonging isn’t a slogan. It’s how leadership shows up, how teams connect and how careers grow. That message came to life this spring during our annual, in-person Inclusion Champion (TM) Network meeting, where we heard Allen Fasnacht VP, WellSpan Health, and President, WellSpan Evangelical Community Hospital, whose journey reminds us why people are always at the center of healthcare.
His career began where many WellSpan careers do, caring directly for patients. What started at the bedside grew into leadership not because he set out to be a president, but because he stayed committed to understanding people, listening closely and meeting teams where they are. That mindset still guides his leadership today and it’s the same mindset we look for in every person who considers joining WellSpan.
From Caregiver to Leader: Growth Rooted in Purpose
Healthcare careers rarely follow a straight line. They evolve through moments of courage, reflection and growth. Our speaker shared that his leadership philosophy didn’t come from titles or offices. It came from personal experience.
Like many professionals, he faced moments when he wasn’t sure it was safe to fully be himself at work. Navigating that uncertainty shaped how he now leads with empathy, attentiveness and a deep understanding that when people feel they must hold something back, it affects how they show up.
The takeaway was simple but powerful.
When people feel safe, seen and valued, everything changes.
That belief drives how WellSpan supports its teams, because when our people are supported, our patients and communities are too.
Meeting People Where They Are
One of the strongest themes from the conversation was the importance of presence over perfection.
In healthcare, change is constant. Whether it’s evolving workflows, new technology or system-wide growth, progress only works when people feel included in the future being built. True leadershipmeans slowing down long enough to listen, even when the conversations are uncomfortable or complex.
At WellSpan, leaders are encouraged to ask:
- Who might not feel fully welcomed into this moment?
- Whose voice is missing?
- What does this person need to feel respected and clear?
That kind of leadership doesn’t live in strategy decks. It lives in everyday interactions. And those moments are where culture is shaped.
“You’re the One” Isn’t Just a Message, It’s a Responsibility
At WellSpan, we often say “You’re the One.” It’s a reminder that culture is built by individuals choosing to act with care, integrity and courage.
Sometimes being “the one” means:
- Speaking up when someone is interrupted
- Checking in when something doesn’t sit right
- Making space for a different perspective
These moments may feel small, but they aren’t. They define whether someone feels they belong.
For candidates considering WellSpan, this matters. We don’t ask people to fit a mold. We invite them to bring their experiences, identities and talents fully to the work. Healthcare is inherently human and the best care comes from teams who trust each other.
Why Candidates Choose WellSpan
People join WellSpan for many reasons—meaningful work, professional growth and competitive benefits. What keeps them here is something deeper, a culture where inclusion is intentional and belonging is practiced daily.
Our leaders understand that:
- Innovation requires diverse perspectives
- Trust fuels strong teams
- Belonging enables people to do their best work
That commitment extends beyond statements or initiatives. It’s reflected in how we recruit, how we develop talent and how we support one another during moments of change.
