Nurse Externship Program
WellSpan Health supports nursing students’ journeys toward lifelong nursing careers. We offer flexible externships for nursing students year-round. Choose a nine-week summer immersion program or an open-door, extended program in 2023.
As an extern, you’ll provide direct patient care across specialties, experience multiple units and disciplines, and learn from an engaged nursing team. An externship is a great way for a rising senior to explore career paths and define your goals as you approach graduation.

- WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital
- WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital
- WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital
- WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital, Lebanon
- WellSpan Philhaven Hospital, Mt. Gretna
- WellSpan Surgery and Rehabilitation Hospital, York
- WellSpan Waynesboro Hospital
- WellSpan York Hospital
- Program begins June 5, 2023, and ends August 5, 2023
- Two four-week paid clinical experiences
- 1:1 experienced RN preceptor
- Full-time hours
- Varied shifts based on preceptor
- Available the summer before a nursing student is set to graduate
- Areas of rotation:
- Behavioral Health
- Emergency Department
- Intensive Care Unit
- Labor & Delivery/Maternity
- Medical & Surgical Units
- Other specialty units may be available
- Program is rolling and can start any time during students’ senior year
- Minimum of an 8-hour shift every two weeks (additional hours can be picked up as schedule permits)
- 1:1 experienced RN preceptor
- Varied shifts based on preceptor
- Open to senior nursing students (must have completed medical/surgical clinical rotation in an accredited nursing program)

- Intermediate Care, Med/Surg
- Intermediate Care, Cardiac
- Labor & Delivery
- Medical & Surgical Units
- Neurology
- Orthopedics
