Vice President Patient Care Services & Chief Nursing Officer - WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital
Job Description:
Under the general supervision of the Vice President & President-WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital (WGSH), organizes, directs operations and evaluates the provision of specified Hospital professional and/or support services. Working through subordinate department heads, provides administrative leadership, support and direction within the hospital. In doing so, assists department heads in establishing standards of operation, developing organizational plans to carry out activities within limits of available funds and evaluating services provided. As Chief Nursing Officer, is accountable for nursing care/practice and patient care services throughout the institution and develops the Nursing vision for the hospital, in collaboration with System priorities and System nurse practice teams.
Duties and Responsibilities
Ensures the efficient, economic, and quality performance of assigned departments/areas of responsibility to support or provide quality health care services.
Ensures the provision of affordable health care services by the acquisition, utilization, and organization of available resources and the development of improved techniques and practices.
Recommends and updates long-range plans which support the Hospital's philosophy and general objectives.
Ensures compliance with all regulatory agencies governing health care delivery and the rules of accrediting bodies by continually monitoring operations and its programs and physical properties, and initiating changes where required.
Responsible for the efficiency and effectiveness of systems that support the delivery of patient care; the quality of patient care across the Hospital for all disciplines; and the achievement of quality patient outcomes.
Participates with leaders from the governing body, management, physician staff, and clinical areas in decision-making structures and processes.
Regularly participates in development of Hospital-wide plans, goals and objectives as a member of administrative management group and various committees.
Leads Operations, Nursing and patient care with the Office of the President, East Region Board of Directors and other executive level forums responsible for setting system strategy and having the potential to impact patient care or influence the practice of Nursing.
Assists in the development and implementation of the WellSpan vision, philosophy and operating plan which are aligned with that of the Health System.
Develops and implements hospital-wide nursing practice and patient care programs for the delivery of patient care within the organization.
Supports and mentors shared decision making and clinical advancement philosophy
Oversees the establishment and updating of nursing standards of practice and standards of care, as well as nursing policies and procedures which are consistent with evidence-based practice, current nursing research, PA Nursing Practice Act, DOH and JCAHO regulations.
Ensures consistency and appropriate standardization related to nurse staffing plans, staffing ratios, skill mix, and use of premium staffing. Responsible for processes related to patient flow and bed management in collaboration with clinical and operational teams.
Develops a culture of teamwork, continuous improvement efforts, orienting and coaching assigned staff to attain goals in a culture of performance excellence.
Continually strives to achieve clinical and operational performance improvement to achieve financial targets for labor and non-labor expenses and fostering lean daily management.
Establishes efficient and effective systems that support the delivery of patient family centered care, the quality of patient care throughout the hospital and related services for all disciplines, and the achievement of quality patient outcomes and patient experience goals.
Creates and maintains an environment of recognition, nursing excellence aligned with the Pathways to Excellence designations, celebration and acknowledgment of the contributions of the nursing staff to patient care and to the profession of nursing.

Establishes and maintains strong, effective and collaborative relationships with local schools of nursing and other community organizations which advance professional nursing and improve the care provided to our community.
Creates systematic processes, monitoring tools and reports to manage the accountability of teams for quality, patient experience, engagement and stewardship results, utilizing continuous improvement and innovation.
Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
Represents the System on internal committees and external professional/civic service organizations. Meets with members of the community to promote good community relations.
Qualifications
- Minimum Experience: 5 - 8 years in hospital/health care environment
- Minimum Education: Master's Degree
- Required Certification: Registration and current RN license in PA
