Job Description:

Under the general supervision of the Manager-Central Sterile Processing, supervises the day-to-day operations of the Central Sterile Processing Department. Ensures the recommended standards for set assembly, decontamination, inspection, containerizing and sterilization of surgical instruments are met. Ensures that the work flow remains consistent and continuous, providing superior customer service.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Provides direct and effective supervision to ensure timely delivery of clean, sterile or High Level Disinfection instrumentation and medical equipment.
2. Maintains, monitors and controls service specific instrumentation and supplies for assigned Operating Room service lines; delegates responsibilities to assigned Sterile Processing Technician II staff.
3. Reviews the daily surgical schedule and obtains instruments, supplies and equipment for scheduled and emergent procedures. Completes conflict checking of the surgical schedule and instrument/equipment inventory.
4. Collaborates with Central Sterile Processing Manager in evaluating change in policies and procedures and implements appropriate systems to accommodate these changes.
5. Ensures that all equipment is functioning properly, notifies manufacturer or medical/instrument repair immediately when malfunctions occur and follows up on recurring issues.
6. Monitors inventory levels to maintain adequate supplies, waste prevention and cost control measures.
7. Ensures that all externs/students adhere to both departmental and administrative policies and procedures.
8. Monitors, maintains and records all department quality assurance systems activities in accordance with departmental and facility policy, The Joint Commission, CDC, FDA, AAMI, OSHA and DOH regulations.
9. Collaborates with other departments to ensure that appropriate professional standards are consistently applied within both surgery and patient care areas.
10. Coordinates service specific instrumentation procurement with Operating Room Service Line RNs, Sterile Processing Technician II staff and the Central Sterile Processing Manager as needed.
11. Maintains the Biological Monitoring System/Records for Instrument Processing and Flash Sterilizers used in Perioperative Suite.
12. Performs shift-change report in order to communicate department status with oncoming shift staff members.
13. Performs in a technician capacity as needed.

Qualifications.

• Minimum Experience:
  • 1 - 3 years experience in Central Sterile Processing as a Central Sterile Processing Technician II; or surgical technology
• Minimum Education:
  • High School or G.E.D.
• Preferred Education:
  • Bachelor’s Degree
• Required Certification:
  • CRCST certification
• Preferred Certification:
  • Registration, BLS Certification
• Physical Demands:
  • Moderate physical effort (lift/carry 11 to 25 lbs)
  • Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking
  • Lifts supplies/equipment
• Skills:
  • Outstanding communication, interpersonal, leadership and computer skills; Proficiency in transporting and disposing of hazardous materials per hospital policy; Must have developed analytical decision-making abilities; Must be capable of working in team environment with staff of varying backgrounds; Must also be able to work with Perioperative Nursing staff to coordinate processing of instrument sets to accommodate the daily O.R. case load
