General Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Senior Manager-Language and Interpretation Services, supervises Interpreter Services at York and Gettysburg Hospitals. Uses initiative to assess situations and work interdependently with other staff to meet the needs of the patient and the Health Team. Creates goals for the team, distributes work among the team and is responsible for providing adequate coverage when interpretation services are needed.
As part of the Health Team, facilitates the communication process between Hospital physicians/staff and Low English Proficiency (LEP) patients and their families. Assists interpreters when necessary providing interpretations and translating documents. Oversees the Medical Interpreter Certification program.

Duties and Responsibilities:
1 Oversees the scheduling of Interpreters team and monitors and adjusts staff work schedules and locations to ensure that all scheduling areas are properly staffed.
2 Assesses the urgency of various, competing needs for interpretation services and deploys personnel based on the level of urgency.
3 Hires, trains, evaluates and counsels staff. Initiates or makes recommendations for personnel actions.
4 Reviews safety and quality reports with the Senior Manager and determines which interventions are necessary to improve patient experience and patient safety
5 Assists interpreters and health care providers in using Video Remote Interpretation (VRI) technology to provide interpretation services.
6 Provides direct support to the trainers for the Medical Interpreter Certification Program and serves as a proctor and mentor for the medical interpreters in training.
7 Serves on the leadership team of Language and Interpretation Services, and assists with developing the strategic plan and department goals.
8 Formulates policies and operating practices for Interpretation Services.
9 Develops workflows to improve efficiency.
10 Compiles data and provides analyses for regular and ad hoc reports
11 Assists the Low English Proficiency (LEP) patients and their families in coping with illness and the associated stress by interpreting and translating medical instructions and procedures. Records results of patient encounter in the patients medical chart as needed.
12 Assists the LEP patients with completion of various healthcare forms as needed with the corresponding department. as needed.
13 Gives support to health care providers in dealing with LEP patients so that a comprehensive and culturally sensitive assessment may be performed.
14 Assists in the development and presentation of training programs designed to enhance the employees understanding of the cultural needs of LEP patients. Helps WellSpan become a model of cultural proficiency.
15 Provides emotional support by listening to patient and family concerns and communicating with the physician/medical staff for additional clarification.
16 Attends huddles for Gettysburg and York Hospitals and maintains open communications with all the care teams.
17 Counsels patients and their families as well as medical staff on community resources available to assist in post hospital care.
18 Oversees the translation of written communications and materials from English to other languages, as needed.
19 Serves as a liaison between patients and English-speaking healthcare providers. Coordinates the translation of patient's medical history and complaints and passes it on to the provider. Communicates physician's recommendations to patient.
20 Works with the Medical Interpreter Instruction Coordinator to deliver the Medical Interpretation Certification Program and provides direct support to the trainers. Is knowledgeable of all aspects of the certifications program.
21 Obtains instructions and clarification from other interpreters in order to provide follow-up services to patients and their families.
22 Provide cross-coverage for emergency situations, time off, and other staffing needs. Is willing to work beyond normal working hours, on weekends and holidays as needed, on all shifts and to perform on call as needed or required.
23 Identifies and assesses problems that may arise and brings issues to the Manager if necessary.

Required Skills


Fluent in reading, writing, speaking and translating English and a second language; typing and basic computer skills; excellent interpersonal/communications skills

Medical terminology; Training to be a certified trainer for the Medical Interpreter Certification Program

Must possess a valid driver’s license in the current state of residence.  Driving record must meet requirements established by WellSpan Risk Management. 

Required Experience

Minimum Experience: 2 years as Interpreter; Working knowledge of Video Remote Interpretation (VRI) services

Required Certification/Registration: WellSpan In-house Bridging the Gap (BTG) certification required within 6 months

Preferred Certification/Registration: Certificate from an Accredited 40-hour Medical Interpreter Training Program
