Job Description:

Under general supervision and reporting directly to the Manager of Clinical Improvement, the Supervisor performs a variety of duties including, but not limited to; Supervision, direction, workflow management, work distribution, time management (Kronos), and performance development of the Clinical Improvement team and primary contact for publicly reported data agencies. Works collaboratively with the Service Lines, Clinical Effectiveness Teams (CET), and the Hospitals in continuous quality improvement for excellent patient care. Quality Assurance for all reportable data results through qualitative and quantitative analyses to confirm findings accuracy. Presents data in appropriate formats. Coordinates departmental activities in order to meet all deadline requirements.


Duties and Responsibilities


  1. Oversees and supervises data abstraction and related clinical information collection, with assessment of workflow.
  2. Develops, designs and maintains new policy, procedure or workflow, based on management assessment and unit business need.
  3. Acting as subject matter expert, enters or retrieves data from various computer programs associated with the data abstraction, registry and performance improvement work for Clinical Improvement.
  4. Clinical data analyses to determine recommendations for improvement of patient care delivery, identify opportunities for improvement and achieve desired patient outcomes.
  5. Develops process and methodology to perform structured audits and related quality assurance of abstracted records and any dashboard reporting from Clinical Improvement data. Documents and reports results.
  6. Supervision of the compilation and preparation of data for timely reporting.
  7. Evaluates procedures, resolves problems and implements changes to improve performance, employee satisfaction and care quality.
  8. Training and/or training coordination for all new Clinical Improvement staff.
  9. Resolves errors identified, communicates resolution or solution.
  10. Establishes data bases as needed by the Clinical Improvement Team.
  11. Interacts with vendors as needed, handling contract review and amendments for signature by the CIO.
  12. Works as one and collaboratively with all WellSpan departments as it relates to data informatics and reporting requirements, including System leadership.
  13. Collaborates with appropriate Service Lines and Hospital teams for any identified problems and/or outcomes for further investigation or recommended action.
  14. Leads and participates as a professional team member in clinical data discussions by attendance and active, thoughtful participation in Clinical Effectiveness Teams, Meaningful Use, Utilization and/or other practice specific meetings or discussions for the purpose of clinical improvement.
  15. Provides a mentor and leadership role for data abstraction as a subject matter expert, and through independent or team analysis, leads in performance improvement efforts and processes.
  16. Carries a case load for data abstraction, as needed to meet reporting deadlines.

  • Minimum Experience:
    • 5 or more years’ experience in the healthcare/data field. Healthcare quality assurance/data abstraction/data registry or experience in a managed care setting desirable; Supervisory experience in healthcare/data field.


  • Minimum Education:
    • Bachelor’s Degree.


  • Required Certification:
    • Registration: Any of the following preferred:  Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA); Certified Health Data Analyst (CHDA); or Certified Professional Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) 


  • Skills:
    • Medical record abstracting & coding; database & advanced Microsoft Office or other computer skills absolutely required; excellent professional written and verbal communication skills, Excellent teamwork skills; knowledge of appropriate tools & methodologies, knowledge of medical terminology, ability to work independently and as an integral part of a collaborative team, knowledgeable in the application of performance improvement models, able to conceptualize and convey the importance/impact of data integrity in terms of patient management, study results, cost efficiency, quality of service, and the goals of clinical improvement; Supervisory experience and related training
