Job Description:

Under the general direction of the Chief Physicist (Radiation Oncology), provides treatment planning, dose calculations and other clinical physics services required to effectively and properly treat patients receiving therapeutic radiation. Performs independently at an advanced skills level and provides direction to dosimetrists and Radiation Therapists regarding treatment planning and execution of therapies.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Accountabilities:

  1. Performs external beam radiotherapy treatment planning and dose calculations both by hand and the use of a treatment planning system.
  2. Provides clinical physics services and participates as required in all therapies offered by the Department, such as brachytherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery and other therapies as they are initiated.
  3. Assists and advises in the simulation and treatment process.
  4. Understands the measurements necessary for acceptance, commissioning, periodic testing and calibration of all equipment and independently performs these measurements.
  5. Provides appropriate and timely clinical physics and QA support and demonstrates the ability to make scientifically sound QA measurements and calculations and to discern the quality of the resulting data and its appropriateness for use in the clinic.
  6. Ensures equipment functions properly and that the required State, Federal and departmentally defined quality assurance checks, output measurements and protocols are appropriately performed in a timely manner and that documentation of this is available on site at all times.
  7. Adheres to applicable policies and procedures described in the manual entitled "Quality Assurance, Radiation Safety and Quality Management Program" and carries out "Responsibilities of the Radiation Oncology Physicist" as described in same.
  8. Maintains knowledge of and practices proper radiation safety techniques and practices. 
  9. Performs other duties as required in support of the mission to ensure highest quality of patient care in an economically sound and efficient manner.
 

Qualifications

  • Minimum Education:
    • Master's Degree in Radiation Physics, Medical Physics, Bio-Physics, or other related specialty
  • Minimum Field Of Expertise:
    • Medical Physics, Bio-Physics, or equivalent physics specialty
  • Required Certification:
    • Board Certified or Board Eligible by American Board of Radiology in Therapeutic Radiological Physics, American Board of Medical Physics in Radiation Oncology Physics; or equivalent
  • Minimum Experience Required:
    • 5 – 8 years of full time clinical experience in radiation oncology physics
