General Summary

Works in collaboration with the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) to provide leadership and strategic direction for the practice of nursing and nursing operations within WellSpan York Hospital (WYH). Work closely with the CNO to facilitate an interdisciplinary team approach to the delivery of patient care for inpatient services, behavioral health services, and various ambulatory services, with a focus on Emergency Services. Assists in planning, implementing, and evaluating standards and practices for patient care, and the delivery of care and services and works closely with physician and system leaders to enhance the delivery, quality, and efficiency of patient care.

Essential Functions:

  • Assists in developing and creating a strategic plan that is aligned key goals and strategies with WYH and WSH.
  • Participates in strategic planning, goal setting, budget preparation and priority setting, and program development for the WYH Division of Nursing in collaboration with the CNO and other key stakeholders.
  • Assists in developing and implementing hospital-wide nursing practice and patient care programs that are based in evidence-based practice and current nursing research for the delivery of high reliable patient care throughout the organization, with a focus on Emergency Services.
  • Collaborates with key stakeholders to ensure continuous performance improvement initiatives are designed to measure and improve the quality of care delivered and are consistent with the organization priorities within the Lean Management System, including strategies to reduce variation in clinical care and impact on efficiency, cost, and quality.
  • Supports strategy development and goal achievement for Service Excellence initiatives for the WYH Division of Nursing, with a focus on Emergency Services, which include employee and patient engagement, MAGNET designation, and shared decision making.
  • Collaborates with other system and entity leaders to assist in developing strategies to drive throughput and contemporary utilization of beds at WYH.
  • Mentors, coaches and develops leadership talent and abilities in all levels of nursing staff. Provides leadership learning opportunities as appropriate.
  • Works with the CNO to create and maintain an environment of recognition, celebration and acknowledgement of the contributions of the nursing staff to patient care and to the profession of nursing.
  • Ensures compliance with all regulatory agencies governing health care delivery and the rules of accrediting bodies by continually monitoring operations and its programs and physical properties, and initiating changes where required to areas of direct responsibility. Works with CNO to ensure compliance in all nursing practice areas as assigned.
  • Ensures areas with direct responsibility develop and implement physician, administrative, nurse triads. Serves as role model with CNO for implementation.
  • Creates an environment of continuous learning and professional development through the provision of educational programs and competency education which enhances the career development of clinical providers, with a focus on areas of responsibility.

Common Expectations:

  • Works in collaboration with the CNO to initiate and/or maintain organization wide policies and procedures to facilitate the kind and type of organization needed to accomplish WYH's strategic plan and initiatives, with a focus on the Division of Nursing and Emergency Services.
  • Represents WYH on system councils and committees and collaborates with system stakeholders to foster teamwork and partnerships to meet entity and systems goals.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

  • Masters Degree Nursing or Related Healthcare Field Required

Work Experience:

  • 6 years in nursing with Leadership experience in hospital/healthcare Required

Licenses:

  • Licensed Registered Nurse Upon Hire Required or
  • Registered Nurse Multi State License Upon Hire Required and
  • Board Certified Nurse Executive within 1 year Required or
  • Board Certified Nurse Executive, Advanced Certification within 1 year Required

Courses and Training:

  • Lean Training within 1 year Preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent human relations and oral/written communications skills
  • Proven leadership skills.
  • Track record of clinical improvement results.
  • Must possess an advanced understanding of Emergency Services, patient care delivery systems, healthcare finance, and policy and governance.
