Under the general supervision of the Chief Nursing Officer and Service Line Leadership, directs the daily clinical operations and work activities of professional nursing and clinical support staff in an assigned service line. The Senior Director works collaboratively in a triad model with the Medical Directors and Service Line Operations Director to ensure access to services and quality of care for patients. This position will have clinical oversight of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, medical assistants, and technicians. This position may also have operational oversight of practice managers and administrative activities. This position is responsible for multiple practice locations and cross-continuum oversight in applicable service lines.
Collaborates with Service Line Operations Director, Clinical Managers, and Practice Managers to recommend clinical staffing levels as per professional organizations’ staffing guidelines. Structures an adequate staffing mix of competent personnel by supervising and approving the development, preparation, and maintenance of clinical staffing schedules that meet practice/site and ANA staffing principles and appropriate benchmarking.
Ensures that appropriate clinical standards and practices are developed and implemented as a result of research and non-research findings. Maintain established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental, and infection control standards as per agency and state regulations.
Identifies patient/client needs and ensures implementation of quality programs to meet those needs; uses outcomes data to direct quality improvement action plans. Encourages staff to resolve patient/family concerns in a timely manner and assists staff when necessary.
Initiates or makes recommendations for personnel actions using a Just Culture model and as per the System’s Human Resources policies in collaboration with Practice Managers, Clinical Managers and Service Line Operations Directors.
Acts as a change agent in the identification, development, planning, implementation, and value measurement of clinical care strategies to support and integrate quality patient care and professional practice. Provides clinical analysis and evaluation of clinical care and recommends revision of clinical systems, processes, and workflow to ensure achievement of positive patient outcomes for WellSpan Health.
Provides direct supervision to the Clinical Managers. Creates an empowered shared decision-making environment; promotes staff participation in Shared Decision-making activities; establishes a vision/goal for succession planning.
Consults with other specialists, including but not limited to: Patient Safety, Quality Improvement, Value Transformation, Organizational, Learning and Development, etc., as required and adjusts clinical care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.
Provides clinical direction of clinical teams in practices in collaboration with the Director of Operations.
Serves as the clinical leadership resource, mentor, and coach for Clinical Supervisors within the service line.
Utilizes lean principles to foster operational improvement in patient centeredness, quality of care and cost-effectiveness.
Develops and implements goals for operational areas. Consistently monitors progress toward goals and holds teams accountable to achieve them.
Conducts site visits at clinical sites/facilities across the system to observe the environment of care and clinical staff. At the request of the Practice manager assists in the evaluation of clinical staff performance by shadowing patient care and evaluating skills/competencies/workflows (as applicable). Aids with staff counseling and establishment of staff performance action plans.
Provides direct clinical care as a practice registered nurse for a set number of hours per pay, as set forth by leadership.
Work with non-clinical/administrative operations leadership to foster growth and system-wide collaboration through supervision, evaluation, process improvement and project oversight, if applicable.
