Job Description

Under the general supervision of the Security Supervisors, provides a safe and secure environment for, and responds to the needs of patients, employees, visitors, and other customers of the System. Protects System buildings, assets and premises as assigned.


Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Accountabilities:

  1. Patrols the buildings and premises to prevent fire, theft, vandalism, and intrusion
  2. Patrol parking lots to ensure the safety of individuals and the security of parked vehicles
  3. Reports all suspicious activity, parking violations and abandoned vehicles
  4. Responds to emergency situations such as accidents and injuries, fire alarms, crimes in progress and safety hazards
  5. Provides assistance, summons proper authorities, and polices area to maintain order, safety and to protect property
  6. Employs all necessary equipment to include Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during situations that are deemed unsafe and during interactions with precaution patients
  7. Responds to inquiries for advice or assistance from employees, students, visitors, and other customers; provides physical restraint of psychiatric patients and others as needed
  8. Monitors the conduct of visitors on premises; confronts unauthorized persons for questioning as needed; secures weapons and contraband
  9. Escorts personnel and visitors to parking lots and hospital buildings
  10. Notifies police in case of theft, breaking and entering or other matters requiring notification of authorities
  11. Participates in investigations; maintains records, prepares incident reports and other documents pertinent to safety and security activities and attends hearings
  12. Conducts routine visual inspections; reports safety and/or fire hazards or security violations.
  13. Coordinates and/or responds to on site fire drills; responds to on site fire alarms and assists the responding fire department.
  14. Verifies monthly inspections are completed as required to include but not limited to panic alarm inspections, fire extinguisher inspections, door alarm inspections to include supporting documentation
  15. Field Training Officer (FTO) for newly hired officers; reviewing and completing department specific orientation check list
  16. Ensures newly hired officer is assigned & completes required certification training
  17. Complete security access requests within the badge access control system and creating new badges
  18. Assists in managing key system and assigning keys as needed
  19. Schedules, and monitors security activities in assigned areas to ensure secure and safe conditions for employees, patients, and visitors, and to protect System buildings, assets, and premises
  20. Inspects work performance/assignments, and recommends improvements in work methods
  21. Conducts investigations as directed.
  22. Works appropriate leadership throughout organization and law enforcement as needed
  23. Secures and/or unlocks offices and facilities
  24. Supports the parking policy, enforcing parking regulations, providing traffic management, and performing other related duties
  25. Provides administrative support for programs and policy implementation and maintenance as assigned
  26. Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies
  27. Performs Security Operations duties as assigned
  28. Secures patient valuables and found property
  29. Prepares clear, concise, and factual incident reports
  30. Ensures all documentation is submitted as required prior to end of shift
  31. Responsible for daily operations of the shift to include but not limited to documentation, patrols, responses, post assignments, escalation of incidents – Charge Officer
  32. Attends meetings as required
  33. Completes peer interviews when hiring new officers
  34. Takes on-call responsibilities to address immediate incidents/concerns within the region
  35. Works one shift in each building within assigned reach at least once per month
  36. Trained to cover incidents in all buildings within the region they are assigned
  37. Provides training to the team as assigned
  38. Conducts drills as needed
  39. Assists supervisors with administrative tasks and assignments as need
  40. Attends meetings as required
  41. Performs other related duties as identified
  42. Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment and safety standards
  43. Remains current on all required trainings; attends trainings/educational programs as assigned
  44. Participates in monthly department meetings and in-service meetings
  45. Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation


  • Minimum Experience:
    • Military Experience (4 years) OR
    • Law Enforcement Experience (5 Years) OR
    • WellSpan Security Officer Experience (5 Years*) in good standing
    • Security Officer Experience in another organization (7 Years)
    • *In good standing means no disciplinary/corrective action within the last 12 months of employment
    • Leadership is willing to review other combinations of formal education, college credits, training, and experience to be considered for advancement to the next level. Officers whose background and experience exceeds the minimums listed may be used in lieu of the minimum educational requirements. Officers can be hired as a Level 2 Officer if they meet or exceed the Education and/or Experience qualifications. To be considered for an Officer Level 3 Position, Officers must have worked in WellSpan Security for at least 6 months and meet certain minimum requirements (example: number of shifts as a Charge Officer) to be eligible.
    • Required CertificationsShall obtain and maintain the following training certifications:
    • Practical and Tactical Handcuffing
    • Oleoresin Capsicum (Gel)
    • Taser
    • Behavioral Emergency Response Training (BERT)
    • CPR/AED
  • Minimum Education:
    • Associates Degree (or higher degree) OR
    • Act 120 Certification OR
    • Act 235 Certification
  • Required Courses:
    • Successful completion of additional training courses and certifications are required for this position. If this training has not been previously completed by the Security Officer III, the training must be completed within 6 months of accepting this position.
  • Physical Demands:
    • Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking
    • Heavy physical effort (lift/carry 26 to 50 lbs)
