Job Description:

Under the general supervision of the Security Supervisors, provides a safe and secure environment for, and responds to the needs of patients, employees, visitors, and other customers of the System. Protects System buildings, assets and premises as assigned.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Accountabilities:

  1. Patrols the buildings and premises to prevent fire, theft, vandalism, and intrusion
  2. Patrol parking lots to ensure the safety of individuals and the security of parked vehicles
  3. Reports all suspicious activity, parking violations and abandoned vehicles
  4. Responds to emergency situations such as accidents and injuries, fire alarms, crimes in progress and safety hazards
  5. Provides assistance, summons proper authorities, and polices area to maintain order, safety and to protect property
  6. Employs all necessary equipment to include Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during situations that are deemed unsafe and during interactions with precaution patients
  7. Responds to inquiries for advice or assistance from employees, students, visitors, and other customers; provides physical restraint of psychiatric patients and others as needed
  8. Monitors the conduct of visitors on premises; confronts unauthorized persons for questioning as needed; secures weapons and contraband
  9. Escorts personnel and visitors to parking lots and hospital buildings
  10. Maintains post as assigned in accordance with training
  11. Notifies police in case of theft, breaking and entering or other related criminal matters requiring notification of authorities
  12. Assists in investigations
  13. Maintains records, prepares incident reports and other documents pertinent to safety and security activities and attends hearings
  14. Conducts routine visual inspections; reports safety and/or fire hazards or security violations
  15. Coordinates and/or responds to on site fire drills; responds to on site fire alarms and assists the responding fire department
  16. Secures and/or unlocks offices and facilities
  17. Supports the parking policy, enforcing parking regulations, providing traffic management, and performing other related duties
  18. Complies with all department and organizational policies and procedures
  19. Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies
  20. Performs Security Operations duties as assigned
  21. Secures patient valuables and found property
  22. Prepares clear, concise, and factual incident reports
  23. Ensures all documentation is submitted as required prior to end of shift
  24. Completes vehicle checklist
  25. Completes monthly inspections as required to include but not limited to panic alarm inspections, fire extinguisher inspections, door alarm inspections to include supporting documentation
  26. Complete security access requests within the badge access control system as needed
  27. Willing and capable of working at any post within an assigned setting
  28. Assists with the daily operations of the shift to include but not limited to documentation, patrols, responses, post assignments, escalation of incidents and serves as a Charge Officer as needed
  29. Provides administrative support for programs and policy implementation
  30. In the absence of a Supervisor or Security Officer III, conducts shift huddles reviewing incidents from previous shift, current situational awareness information, and upcoming events requiring security intervention and/or assistance
  31. Assists Supervisors by ensuring appropriate staffing for oncoming shift if necessary
 

NonEssential Accountabilities:

  1. Attends meetings as required
  2. Performs other related duties as identified and assigned
 

Common Expectations:

  1. Remains current on all required trainings
  2. Attends trainings/educational programs as assigned
  3. Participates in department meetings and in-service meetings as directed
  4. Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through supporting improvement and innovation
  5. Follows established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment and safety standards
 

Qualifications

  • Minimum Experience:
    • Must meet one of the following criteria:
    • WellSpan Security Officer Experience for 2 years* in good standing
    • OR
    • A combination of experience equaling at least 2 years (total)* in good standing:
    • WellSpan Security Officer Experience
    • Other Healthcare Security Officer
    • Other Security Officer Experience
    • Military Experience
    • Law Enforcement Experience (includes police, corrections and probation/parole)
    • *In good standing means no disciplinary/corrective action within the last 12 months of employment
    • Required CertificationsShall obtain and maintain the following training certifications:
    • Practical and Tactical Handcuffing
    • Oleoresin Capsicum (Gel)
    • Taser
    • Behavioral Emergency Response Training (BERT)
    • CPR/AED
    • Must possess a valid driver’s license in the current state of residence. Driving record must meet requirements established by WellSpan Risk Management.
  • Minimum Education:
    • High School or G.E.D.
  • Required Courses:
    • Successful completion of the below training courses are required for this position. Security Officer I’s requesting to advance to a Security Officer II position, must complete the required training prior to applying for a Security Officer II position. Newly hired Security Officer II’s, must complete the training within 3 months of accepting the position with WellSpan.
  • Physical Demands:
    • Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking
    • Heavy physical effort (lift/carry 26 to 50 lbs)
