General Summary

If you are a Registered Nurse that cares about improving patient’s lives, the Advanced Procedural Suite is the place for you!  APS is a growing department caring for both outpatient and inpatient patients with vascular diseases, at York Hospital.  Care is provided under the general supervision of the Vascular and Neurovascular surgeons and Critical Care pulmonary physicians who perform a variety of invasive interventional procedures that treat patients with vascular peripheral artery disease, neuro endovascular disease and pulmonary disease.

The APS nurse performs a variety of specialized nursing skills utilizing the latest technology for interventional procedures.  Various duties, as they relate to the vascular peripheral artery disease, neuro endovascular and pulmonary interventional procedures include scrubbing, circulating, documenting and monitoring hemodynamic status, utilizing clinical knowledge, technical skills, and professional judgment in accordance with professional and departmental standards and protocols. The APS registered nurse also provides nursing assessment care prior, during and post-procedural including post procedure instructions to these patients.

Under general supervision of the Vascular surgeons the APS nurse assists in various invasive peripheral procedures that include upper and lower extremity interventional vascular procedures.  Additionally, highly complex hybrid abdominal endovascular and thoracic aortic repair’s (EVAR and TEVAR) are performed for aneurysms.

Under general supervision of the Neuro Vascular surgeon the APS nurse assists in cerebral/carotid procedures using the latest technology for diagnosis of strokes and related conditions, including diagnostic cerebral angiography. York hospital has achieved Comprehensive Stroke Accreditation for their stroke program.  This is only achieved by 1% of hospitals nationwide.  This program is the most demanding stroke certification and is designed for those hospitals that have specific abilities to receive and treat the most complex stroke cases. These procedures include caring for patients who have suffered a stroke or have conditions that could lead to a stroke in the future. The Neuro endovascular program also offers advanced care in the form of aneurysmal repair for ruptured cerebral aneurysm, as well as elective endovascular aneurysm repair in the neuro endovascular suite.

Under general supervision of the Critical Care Pulmonologist the APS nurse assists in performing various bronchoscopy procedures.  Recently the York Hospital Pulmonologists have begun to perform cutting edge procedures such as EBUS (endobronchial ultrasound), navigational bronchoscopy with Veran Navigation system (which allows for more accurate and faster diagnosis by using a 3D roadmap) and bronchial thermoplasty for the treatment of asthma.  A bronchoscopy can be critical in diagnosing respiratory issues and staging for cancer diagnoses.
