Recreational Therapist

Full Time (80 hours/2 weeks)

Tuesday through Saturday 9:00am-5:00pm and Thursday evening until 7:30pm


Job Description:

Under general supervision of the Rehabilitation Services Clinical Supervisor, plans, organizes and conducts a program of activities therapy for patients in accordance with individual patient needs, facilitate goals and objectives, and complies with federal and state regulations.


Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Plans, organizes, and coordinates recreation activities, functional leisure skills, and leisure education. Interview persons to assess capabilities, interests, and barriers. Monitors progress and recommends changes and modifications to the program as required.
  2. Consults with physicians and other members of the rehabilitation team regarding therapeutic recreation goals for program referrals.
  3. Performs a thorough evaluation, assessing the needs of the persons receiving services, and set measurable goals that are formulated in conjunction with the rehabilitation team. Develops treatment plans for the patients, including goals and methods to achieve identified goals and coordinate treatment plans with the patient, family and treatment team.
  4. Develop appropriate therapy intensity, implement, and if necessary modify treatment and plans by selecting techniques to facilitate independent functioning for the patients.
  5. Documents patient’s progress and report information to other members of the treatment team.
  6. Recognizes and assesses changes in the patient’s medical and behavioral health status within scope of practice and reports to the nurse. Adjusts treatment interventions accordingly.
  7. Communicate with community service organizations to develop resources for recreational programs. Act as a liaison to outside community recreations/leisure agencies.
  8. Designs community reintegration activities to assist persons receiving services with physical and cognitive needs during physical recreation/leisure activity. Assists persons receiving services in understanding their various needs and limitations and how to manage them.
  9. Identifies and satisfies continuing education requirements. Responsible for maintaining level of evaluation/treatment skill within the standard of current practice.
  10. Provides supervision of therapeutic recreation students, activity assistants, and group recreation assistants.


  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited program in therapeutic recreation
  • Current Therapeutic Recreation Certification
  • Up to 6 months experience required
  • Experience in rehabilitation preferred
