Position Summary:

General Summary:
RN  Clinical Lead supervises care given and services rendered by Surgical Services staff. Oversees the continuity of individualized, age-specific patient care. In addition, will function as a resource for staff in the OR. Continually assures clinical exchange with physicians, staff, Managers, and Surgical Services Director. Establishes relationship with Service Line vendors/manufacturers and ensures timely arrival of specialty items needed for specific service procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The following are essential job accountabilities:
1 Demonstrates commitment to and support of the mission, vision, and customer excellence service standards of WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital.
2 Demonstrates ability to effectively administer the policies and procedures of WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital.
3 Assists Unit Manager to assure quality of care by assisting with the development of unit specific policies and procedures, interpreting Hospital and nursing divisions' philosophies and standards of care; enforcing adherence to state board of nursing and State Nurse Practice Act requirements and to other governing agency regulations; measuring health outcomes against standards; and recommending adjustments as needed.
4 Promotes an environment of open communication, positive physician/staff interactions, and the timely resolution of inter/intradepartmental issues.
5 Acts as a role model in the development of staff to facilitate growth and change in a positive manner. Takes an active role in maintaining nursing staff results through coaching of staff and collaborating with Unit Manager in counseling of staff as needed, by identifying learning requirements.
6 Handles problems and complaints promptly and effectively, utilizing appropriate chain of command; completes appropriate documentation.
7 Provides information to patients and healthcare team by answering questions and resolving issues in a timely manner.
8 Demonstrates an environment of open communication and mutual trust between Operating Room Unit Manager and Clinical Leader role.
9 Aids in the identification of Quality Improvement issues as part of the continuous Quality Improvement Process.
10 Provides input for employee performance appraisals.
11 Facilitates rounds to assure patients and families are informed and included in their plan of care throughout the operative stay.
12 Assesses and coordinates staffing needs for current and upcoming shifts.
13 Utilizes resources to provide for changing care needs in crisis and emergency situations in collaboration with anesthesia, physicians and management staff.
14 Participates in daily huddle with the surgical team.
15 Reviews schedules for one week forward to identify and resolve conflicts and/or equipment needs; communicates conflicts to Operating Room scheduler for education and accountability purposes. Collaborates with the OR Business Office staff to obtain special supply or instrument needs for the schedule.
16 Assumes Charge Nurse position alternately with other clinical leaders on a daily basis to maintain an efficiently run daily schedule.

17 Assigns staff based on staff expertise and educational needs to ensure consistent quality patient care. Communicates schedule changes, assignment changes and change of shift information to OR staff and relief charge nurse.
18 Performs rounds within the OR suite to monitor; facilitates and expedites the OR schedule; and communicate changes to staff and physicians as needed.
19 Collaborates with the OR Educator for assignments of orientees, students, and observation staff. Assists OR Educator to facilitate staff educational opportunities that are identified for procedures or equipment.
20 Performs frequent rounds of units to assess/investigate patient or family needs/concerns.
21 Remains competent to relieve staff nurses for brief periods.
22 Supports and holds staff and self accountable for following standards of care and customer excellence.
23 Oversees the operations of the Operating Room in the absence of the Unit Manager.
24 Demonstrates professionalism through accountability and patient/administrative information confidentiality.
25 Achieves professional growth through completion of three or more educational opportunities and maintains current in service/continuing educational record.
26 Participates in Nursing Shared Governance by being involved in and supportive of Shared Governance initiatives (ie. reads minutes, participates in surveys, and supports colleagues with council involvement), responds positively and professionally to communication from Shared Governance committee members regarding information requests, ideas, and/or actions, and actively promotes and participates in initiatives that may be considered for improving nursing services.

Required Skills

BSN or candidate

Must obtain Clinical Ladder III within 18 months of hire

Minimum of two years of clinical practice in Perioperative setting

Current PA registered nurse license or temporary permit 

BLS course completion
