RN-Perioperative Residency Program-York Hospital

Position Summary:

We are looking for talented New Graduates and Experienced Nurses to join our Perioperative Nursing Team at WellSpan Health York Hospital.  You must live close enough to meet the 30 minute response time when on call.  All applications must include an Essay or Cover Letter explaining your interest in the Perioperative Nurse Residency Program.  The program is slated to start in the August/September time frame.


Program Description:

The OR Nurse Residency program is designed to provide both new graduates and experienced registered nurses the knowledge and skills necessary for a rewarding career in the perioperative setting. 

The residency combines department-based training, a five-day didactic Perioperative Nursing course, and simulation training prior to entering the Operating Room.  Residents are oriented to both the RN circulator and scrub roles.  After a dedicated period with a preceptor, the resident will rotate through a core group of specialties and shifts to gain an understanding of a wide variety of surgical procedures. Our residents spend an average of 9 to 12 months in the program.

WellSpan Health York Hospital is a Level 1 Trauma Center with 24/7 surgical coverage in 18 operating suites which performs more than 15,000 procedures each year using a safety-centered approach.  Patients ranging in age from neonatal to geriatric.  RNs are paired with an experienced preceptor (RN's and/or Surgical Technicians) and trained to work with surgeons on a variety of procedures including * Robotic * Oncology * Vascular * Plastic & Reconstructive * Thoracic * GI * Orthopedic/Orthopedic traumas, and more.

What You Need to Be Successful:

Registered Nurse (RN) – OR New Graduate Nurse Residency Program:

  • Graduate from an accredited Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program preferred but not required
  • Licensed and eligible to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Pennsylvania at the time of hire
  • New Grads w/no experience in OR can be considered but clinical hours (preferred) in Critical Care; ED; L&D; ICU; Inpatient units; pre/post-op
  • New Grads with Surgical Tech experience are especially valuable
  • Individuals with Vet tech experience are also excellent potential candidates.

Registered Nurse (RN) – OR Experienced Nurse Residency Program:

  • At least one - two years of experience as an RN in an acute care facility preferred. Units preferred but not limited to: Critical Care; ED; L&D; Procedural units, or general Peri-anesthesia units (Pre-op & post-op)
  • Surgical Tech experience is a plus
  • BSN preferred (Associates Nurses will be considered with 1+ years of experience).
  • Individuals with Vet tech experience are also excellent potential candidates.
