General Summary:


Under general supervision, provides and coordinates treatment and services to psychiatric patients.


Duties and Responsibilities:

 

1 Interviews patients and family members to obtain information about home environment, family relationships, health history, and patient's personality traits.
2 Administers medications.
3 Coordinates care of assigned patients.
4 Conducts individual or group therapy sessions. Assesses patients' progress and modifies or extends treatment program accordingly.
5 Documents current, accurate observations of care to the patient in appropriate records.
6 Provides health care instruction/education to patient and family members.
7 Provides medication checks


 

Required Skills
  • Requires problem solving and interpersonal skills to work effectively with clients, their families, the treatment team, and referral agencies
  • Knowledge and skills to teach clients and families on a 1:1 basis or in a group about medications and other health related issues.
  • Requires ability to assess client needs, make independent decisions and referrals when needed, and appropriate follow-up so that client’s needs are met.
  • A high level of interpersonal skill, both listening and speaking, is required when providing therapeutic interventions and providing counseling on sensitive client matters.
  • Knowledge of and ability in the care and handling of clients in a specific age group (children, adolescents, adults, and older adults) as assigned is required, including consideration of the special needs and behaviors of that age group and that program. If more than one age group is served, knowledge and ability specific to each age group is required.
  • A moderate level of physical effort is required is required, such as walking, standing, assisting clients, and behavioral management of clients
  • Visual ability is required to observe clients behavior, actions, and respond appropriately.
Required Experience
  • Current Registered Nurse license in the state of Pennsylvania. Certification in psychiatric mental health nursing is recommended.
  • Knowledge of psychiatric nursing care that is normally acquired in at least one year of mental health work experience. Must be trained and able to implement Therapeutic Crisis Intervention principles.
