General Summary:

Under the supervision of the Medical Director-Vulnerable Populations and working collaboratively with entity and service line leadership, develops, implements and coordinates a program of comprehensive services to help patients optimize functional abilities and develop effective pain management skills while minimizing risk of harm.

Duties and Responsibilities:

   1   Works with service line and entity leadership on development and successful execution of a strategic plan and vision for comprehensive pain services within the System, centered on the advancement of clinical practice of pain management and ensuring adequate resources for clinical and non-clinical support for patient care.

   2   Assumes a leadership role in the development, implementation and management of a WellSpan Health pain program, including the creation of pain leadership teams within each community.  Organizes services in a manner to ensure timely and appropriate access to pain treatments, including effective triage of services.

   3   Ensures the development of interdisciplinary clinical pathways, standards of care, and process improvement activities to evaluate the impact of programs and initiatives on clinical outcomes, quality, patient safety, patient experience, sustainability and promotion of the System’s mission and vision.

   4   Facilitates the utilization of performance improvement, quality, research and technology in the change and delivery of pain management services and approaches.

   5   Collaborates with health care providers and other System leaders in decision making structures and processes.

   6   Drives the implementation of clinical process redesign and standardization of best practices across the continuum of care, including inpatient and outpatient, relevant to the scope of practice for pain management.

   7   Serves as a System liaison on all aspects of pain care to health care professionals, staff, patients, families and the community.

   8   Coordinates development of patient education and provider professional education, including materials, related to pain management and comprehensive pain services.

   9   Facilitates and/or participates in Chronic Pain Clinical Effectiveness Team/Chronic Pain Leadership groups and WellSpan Opioid Peer Review Group.

  10   Works to promote System pain management services to payers (including Medicaid) and employers, working collaboratively with Population Health, Public Relations and Marketing, Finance/Care Contracting and Employer Wellness services.

  11   Facilitates individual case/peer reviews to ensure best practices for high-quality care and appropriate prescribing activities (e.g., working with WellSpan addiction leader to review overdose deaths of WellSpan patients).

  12   Works collaboratively with System leaders, including addiction leader, in ensuring the System and its providers understand and comply with regulatory, insurance and other (e.g., Joint Commission) requirements related to pain and with opioids.

Required Skills
  • Pharmacy Bachelor's Degree Required / Pharm D. Preferred 
  • Registration and current RPh license in PA


Required Experience
  • 5 - 7 years of experience in programmatic management of a pain program. Knowledge of regulatory standards, both national and state.  Experience in clinical pain management and/or pain program development preferred.
