The WellSpan Phlebotomy Training Program is designed to provide individuals the opportunity to develop the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective skills necessary to successfully work as a phlebotomist. This program is designed to be a gateway to bring quality phlebotomists into the WellSpan Health system. Most individuals who have completed this program have been offered positions with WellSpan, however employment is not guaranteed.
The program is 7 weeks in duration, with an average of 35-40 hours of training and instruction per week. The course is broken down into two parts: classroom instruction and clinical experience.
The classroom education portion includes at least 80 hours of classroom time.
- Lecture topics will include: human anatomy, medical terminology, and safety & infection control.
- Classroom and simulated patient instruction will cover routine phlebotomy, special blood collections, dermal puncture, and additional duties of phlebotomists in a modern healthcare setting.
- Daily, at home, independent, study time is recommended to prepare for exams that will be given to gauge the student’s understanding of each day’s lesson
The clinical experience portion of the program includes 150 hours of time with mentor phlebotomists performing actual patient care.
- Individuals will be given hands on instruction, practice phlebotomy, and be observed performing phlebotomy on patients.
- Student will rotate among WellSpan hospital’s inpatient phlebotomy departments and the outpatient lab annex locations.
- Rotations will be scheduled at the facilities in the area surrounding the hospital or location in which the classroom instruction is given.
Upon successful completion of the program the individual will receive a Certificate of Completion. The individual will be eligible for the ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathology) certification examination in the category of Phlebotomy Technician and will be eligible for employment at any WellSpan location. Students are encouraged to apply for positions with WellSpan upon completion of the course. Completion of the course will reflect favorably when applications are considered but does not guarantee a position with WellSpan.
Every application will be considered for entry into the program.
- Approximately 20-60 applications are received for each session of the program.
- Based upon the application submitted and references received, 10-25 individuals will be contacted to schedule interviews. Interviews will begin approximately 10 weeks prior to the scheduled start of each session.
- Of those interviewed, 4-10 students will be selected to attend each session. Selected students will be contacted 6 weeks prior to the scheduled start of each session.
Individuals are encouraged to re-apply to future sessions if they are not initially accepted.

Quality of Life
Franklin County, named after Benjamin Franklin, was officially formed in 1784. One of its two main towns, the borough of Chambersburg, lies 13 miles north of Maryland, and is known for its "green, safe environment." In the southern part of Franklin County, the borough of Waynesboro sits just two miles north of the Mason-Dixon Line and is known for its rich industrial history.
Franklin County is in the heart of South-Central Pennsylvania where you'll find mountains, lakes, and a picturesque countryside coupled with theater, music, skiing, hunting, fishing, and much more. We're in the heart of America's fruit orchards, so peaches, apples, and lots of other local produce are available close by. The area features local wineries and breweries, along with a vibrant arts scene at the historic Capitol Theatre and Totem Pole Playhouse. Franklin County merges the best of small-town friendliness with easy access to metropolitan areas. (Patient population: 154,000)
