Dayshift 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, generally Mon through Friday

General Summary

Provides direct supervisory oversight to pharmacy staff. They are integral in initiatives that support the department's individual staff members and foster growth and development through education. They also ensure ongoing department compliance with regulatory requirements and competency. They may complete or be involved in staff member's annual evaluations and provide ongoing feedback. They also have the expertise and advanced knowledge to be viewed as a system expert in either an operations or clinical domain. Additional aspects of the position include potential for participation in departmental scheduling needs, department and system interdisciplinary committees, professional development, and performance improvement initiatives, as well as leadership development and training.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides oversight of safe, accurate, and timely medication order verification including clarification of any medication orders with discrepancies prior to dispensing
  • Provides pharmacy management and oversight of: - Integrity and security of medications in all care locations - Investigational drugs- Preparation of injectable chemotherapy- Medication wastage, returns, and recalls- Reconciliation of controlled substance wastage- Compounding of formulations- Automated dispensing cabinets- Medication label components and label quality- Procurement and inventory management- Quality control assessment- Coaches and mentors pharmacy technicians and Level I through Level IV pharmacists while staffing in the distributive domain- Pharmacy operations as a pharmacist-in-charge (if applicable)- Validates regulatory compliance
  • Provides medication therapy management services in collaboration with other members of the health care team including consultative services pursuant to the department's applicable services which may include:- Pharmacokinetic evaluation, monitoring, and dosing (initiation and daily follow-up)- Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) consults- Anticoagulation initiation and follow-up pursuant to a consult- Renal dose adjustments- Intravenous to oral conversions- Additional clinical opportunities may be available based upon departmental needs, clinical experience, and performance, and may include unit-based pharmacist, antimicrobial stewardship, patient care rounds, or pain management team- Direct patient care as part of interdisciplinary team, if applicable, through development of individualized treatment and monitoring plans for patients- Assists with medication reconciliation during all changes in level of care, including but not limited to, transfers and postoperative care
  • Provides educational services to patients and healthcare providers regarding medication therapy and/or medication safety concerns.
  • Participates in the training and education of pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, pharmacy students and/or residents, and medical residents. Fulfills and maintains American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) preceptor criteria for accredited residency programs, including participation in ongoing departmental preceptor development as available per facility.
  • Reviews and analyzes medication event prevention, monitoring, and reporting with an increased emphasis on patient safety.
  • Utilizes technology to enhance patient safety by ensuring the proper distribution, monitoring, and use of medications; participates in the assessment and maintenance of technology.
  • Participates in quality, safety, and performance initiatives related to medication use at the organizational and departmental levels. Oversees staff quality, safety, and performance initiatives.
  • Adheres to WellSpan Health's medication-use policies and standard work. Develops and modifies polices and standard work related to the use of medications within the health system. Participates in the health system's formulary process, ensuring an appropriate formulary system is in place. Oversees non-formulary medication review.
  • Actively participates on department, facility, or health-system committees, including the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and Drug Shortage Committee (when applicable) and proposes drug shortage management plans.
  • Leads or collaborates in clinical or operational system/process research activities.
  • Attends leadership education or initiatives as required by the health system.
  • Assists with department improvement through focus on initiatives that support the Strategic Priorities and Lean Daily Management System (LDMS).
  • May complete staff's annual evaluations, ensures LMS and HR compliance, as well as department competencies as requested by pharmacy leadership. May participate and complete corrective action as designated. Ensures ongoing regulatory compliance.
  • May oversee maintenance of department's scheduling for technical and professional staff as applicable.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient population. Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment. Provides patient care to assigned patient age group(s).
  • Demonstrates a commitment to patient, visitor and staff by: complying with all applicable safety regulations; learning the impact of medical errors and methodology that will lead to reduction of errors; reporting actual and potential errors, as well as hazardous conditions; identifying opportunities to standardize processes and "error proof" systems that will lead to increased safety; and participating in safety education programs and root cause analyses as required.
  • Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  • Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelors Degree Pharmacy Bachelor's Degree. Required
  • Doctorate Doctor of Pharmacy. Preferred

Work Experience:

  • 5 years Hospital experience and completion of PGY-1. Required and
  • 2 years Hospital experience and PGY-2 residency. Required or
  • 7 years Hospital experience or equivalent management experience. Required

Licenses:

  • Licensed Registered Pharmacist Upon Hire Required

Courses and Training:

  • Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties (BPS) certification. Upon Hire Preferred
