Job Description:

Under general supervision, provides financial case management for patients and their families. Evaluates and coordinates a variety of options for managing personal finances to ensure patient's ability to pay for medical services provided. Interviews patients or responsible person/agency to obtain information and arrange methods of payment or to recover outstanding balances. Provides counseling to patient and family regarding available financial resources and assistance. Advises applicants for uncompensated care and public assistance on procedures for participation in existing programs. Refers patients to appropriate resources for assistance in completion and submission of applications for public assistance or uncompensated care. Also, performs a variety of functions including, but not limited to, account follow up, answering inquiries, resolving problems and interacting with third party payers and/or patients to achieve payment of accounts in accordance with current government and payer regulations. Represents the System in a professional manner using excellent customer service practices in the performance of all duties.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Accountabilities:

  1. Interviews patients or responsible individual(s) to determine present and future financial status and ability to pay medical and/or personal obligations.
  2. Secures information relative to patient's financial status or insurance coverage. May complete insurance forms, verify insurance coverage, and secure other information if needed.
  3. Counsels patients requiring external financial assistance, including recommending third parties.
  4. Refers adults and children to System resources for completion of applications for medical assistance.
  5. Interacts with collection agencies. Primary focus is current patient balances.
  6. Reviews accounts and maintains contact with third parties to ensure timely payments.
  7. Completes applications for uncompensated care. Notifies patients of uncompensated care determinations.
  8. Follows policy for outstanding current balance collection efforts and reviews accounts on a scheduled basis.
  9. Serves as information resource to patients and System staff regarding credit and collection policies, procedures, and payment assistance options.
  10. Answers inquiries from patients, doctors' offices or third party payors and follows through to resolution.
  11. Interprets and explains to patients and their families the charges, services and policies regarding payment of bills.
  12. Initiates paperwork for refund of overpayment to patients, guarantor or third party payors after researching to verify credit balance is correct.
  13. Completes assigned Paperless Collection System (PCS) workfiles within designated time.
  14. Performs various functions to complete and expedite the billing process including, but not limited to, recording patient
  15. identification data and physician diagnosis, investigating charges, correcting and updating data, preparing the claim to bill,
  16. and updating computer functions.
  17. Resolves billing problems and/or receives insurance updates.
  18. Posts all payments and adjustments to the correct patient's account.
  19. Processes rejections and invoice corrections, and rebills in a timely manner.
 

Qualifications

 

  • Minimum Experience:
    • 1 - 2 years (Insurance Billing experience)
  • Minimum Education:
    • High School or G.E.D.
  • Preferred Courses:
    • Medical terminology
  • Skills:
    • Excellent interpersonal/communications skills; ICD9 & CPT coding; insurance knowledge;
    • computer skills; Cutomer service skills preferred
    • Able to work independently
