Pathologist's Assistant - Gettysburg Hospital

Job Description:

Under the supervision of the Pathologist, provides anatomic pathology services. Assist with preparing and dissecting surgical specimens. Prepares and selects tissue samples for analysis. Qualified to do all the work leading up to (but not including) diagnosis - including tissue banking, gross examination of surgical pathology specimens, and complex surgical resections and autopsies.

 

Duties and Responisbilities

  1. Participates in the examination, description, dissection, and processing of tissue samples and is also qualified to participate in gross autopsy dissection.
  2. Assists with intraoperative tissue consultations and other special procedure tissue examinations and preparation.
  3. Obtains biological specimens (e.g. blood, tissue) for studies such as flow cytometry, cytogenetics, immunohistochemistry, etc.
  4. Photographs pertinent gross specimens or microscopic slides.
  5. Ensures proper maintenance of equipment.
  6. Cleans or assists in the cleaning of the Pathology suite and other appropriate sites.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree with a major or minor in a biological or allied health field
  • Needs to be a graduate of an accredited Pathologists’ Assistant program, have completed at least one year of clinical rotations.
  • Ideal candidates have 3 - 5 years experience conducting autopsy and surgical pathology grossing, and be ASCP certified as a PA or eligible to sit for the ASCP certification exam OR have earned a Bachelor’s degree in health sciences or a related field and be otherwise trained as a Pathologists’ Assistant with 2 or more years of experience grossing complex surgical specimens; experience in autopsy evisceration preferred.

  • Wellspan Gettysburg Hospital is seeking a second Pathologist’s Assistant to provide coverage at Wellspan Health and Surgery Center in Hanover, PA on the first, third and fifth (if applicable) Fridays of each month. The PA’s primary responsibility will be to provide on-site, immediate processing of breast specimens.
