PRN Pathologist's Assistant - WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital

General Summary:

TTThe Pathologist's Assistant, under the direction of a Pathologist, and under the supervision of the Administrative Directors of both Chambersburg and Waynesboro Hospital, will be utilized by both facilities to perform the gross examination and descriptions of surgical specimens, dissection, and submission of tissue specimens for histological preparation, provide frozen section assistance and to provide administrative oversight to Histology and Cytology departments.  The employee will be required to travel between both organizations to achieve the essential functions of the position.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Manages the daily operations in both the Histology and Cytology departments.
  2. Develops and maintains policies and procedures in Histology and Cytology in accordance with CAP requirements as delegated by the Medical Director. 
  3. Completes staff evaluations within the required timeframe.
  4. Assesses and reassigns workload in order to comply with emergency or critical request requirements.
  5. Communicates with other shifts regarding departmental work.
  6. Understands and follows hospital fire and safety procedures: knows personal role in case of a fire.
  7. Understands and ensures compliance with all departmental policies and procedures.
  8. Exhibits a thorough knowledge of safety requirements in the laboratory as well as special requirements in the designated departmental area of responsibility.  Assesses and reassigns workload in order to comply with emergency or critical request requirements.
  9. Performs gross descriptions of surgical specimens, dissection and submission of tissue specimens for histological preparation.
  10. Performs frozen section preparations in a timely manner inaccordance with CAP standards.
  11. Submit sections of decalcified specimens
  12. Performs evisceration and complete dissections and present autopsy findings the same day to a Pathologist.
  13. Trim tissue from autopsy for histologic sectioning
  14. Responsible for maintenance of pathology gross dissection areas and autopsy suite, including inventory management.
  15. Answers inquiries regarding procedures for specimen collection.
  16. Evaluates staining quality
  17. Performs turnaround time studies for frozen sections, breast biopsies, autopsy reports and final reports.
  18. Ensures consistency between both organizations, i.e. Chambersburg and Waynesboro Hospitals.
  19. Performs preventative and corrective maintenance on instruments and reports in writing if instruments not functioning properly.
  20. Applies problem-solving and troubleshooting skills to identify problems affecting instruments, techniques or other components.
  21. Is familiar with and helps comply with QA standards and indicators. 
  22. Assures and demonstrates compliance with regulations established by accrediting bodies through successful participation in CAP and other inspection entities.
  23. Maintains and achieves departmental competency through annual assessment by the Pathologists with completion of annual packets for each department as appropriate.
  24. Practices cost saving procedures commensurate with maintaining quality standards.
  25. Successfully participates in CAP surveys.
  26. Attends continuing education seminars/professional meetings.
  27. Maintains membership and active participation in ASCP as a registered Pathology Assistant.
  28. Assists with evaluation of new or modified techniques.
  29. Assists in orientation and training new employees.
  30. Assists with student interns and student tours of the laboratory.
  31. Evaluates and restocks supplies as depleted, alerts supply clerk when necessary and/or orders through appropriate source.
  32. Cleans countertops a minimum of once per shift or as required to maintain a safe and sanitary work environment.
  33. Maintains proficiency in operating, maintaining and troubleshooting all automated equipment in the designated departmental area.
  34. Attends monthly staff meetings to stay informed of continual changes in the lab.
  35. Fulfills annual continuing education requirements and reports to Education Department for tracking.
  36. Collects and reports QA/QC data when requested.
  37. Is responsible for complete verification and documentation of scheduled maintenance.

 

Qualifications: 

  • Master of Science in Pathologists' Assistant from a NAACLS accredited program required
  • Registered or registry eligible as a Pathology Assistant by the Registry Board of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
  • Must achieve registered status within one year of employment.
  • Recent experience performing gross examination of surgical specimens required
