Job Description:

Under general supervision, performs diversified secretarial/clerical duties requiring knowledge of medical terminology and healthcare billing protocols. Provides support for department head and department staff as needed. Assists therapists and/or therapist assistants in preparing patients for therapy, treating patients and gathering supplies.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Accountabilities:

  1. Answers telephones, routes callers, takes messages and provides routine information to callers.
  2. Greets and registers patients in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  3. Schedules patient appointments within established parameters.
  4. Performs a variety of billing functions including recording patient information, preparing and submitting patient charge vouchers and processing insurance information.
  5. Bills insurance carriers for appropriate payments.
  6. Contacts carriers to follow up on balances due.
  7. Maintains up-to-date patient accounts.
  8. Prepares and maintains records of patient charges.
  9. Creates medical records for new patients.
  10. Establishes and maintains files and records on an ongoing basis.
  11. Schedules meetings, training and other requirements for staff.
  12. Enters and/or retrieves data from established computer files using knowledge of various computer software applications.
  13. Compiles data for and prepares regularly scheduled or special reports, analyses and statements.
  14. Prepares the treatment areas for patient care including: sets up, removes, cleans, appropriately stores, and organizes equipment and supplies including linens.  Assists with monitoring of supply stock, informing front office when supplies are low.
  15. Assists therapist with safe transfer/positioning of patients.
  16. Under the direct supervision of a therapist or therapist assistant, prepares for patient treatment, assists with providing care, monitors patient during treatment and cleans equipment according to policy.
  17. Prepares modalities, apply if directed by therapist.
  18. Observes patient’s precautions as related to the patient’s diagnosis.
  19. Ensures safety of patients, visitors and staff while receiving services.  Ensures safety/maintenance of therapy area(s) and equipment, including monitoring of biomed expiration stickers for routine maintenance.
  20. Monitor temperatures of applicable equipment per policy.
  21. Clean hydroculators, ice pack machines, and paraffin baths and document on cleaning logs
  22. Assists department in preparation for regulatory surveys, utilizing checklists to ensure compliance.
  23. Assist all staff with other tasks.  Ask team members if assistance is needed.
 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Experience:
    • 6 - 12 months
  • Minimum Education:
    • High School or G.E.D.
  • Required Certification:
    • BLS Certification
  • Physical Demands:
    • Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking
    • Occasionally lifts, positions, pushes and/or transfers patients, up to 50 pounds
    • Lifts supplies/equipment
    • Occasional reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching
    • Intermittent exertion when performing treatments
  • Skills:
    • Medical Terminology
    • Must possess a valid driver’s license in the current state of residence. Driving record must meet requirements established by WellSpan Risk Management. Willing/able to drive in varying weather conditions and in urban/rural settings.
