Position Summary:

General Summary:



Under direct supervision of the Access Coordinator-ED, performs a variety of functions related to the coordination of care to Labor and Delivery patients. Acts as a receptionist for visitors and serves as a central contact for telephone calls and a distribution point for paper and electronic communication, laboratory and test results. Interacts daily with visitors, patients, physicians and staff and displays a positive, helpful attitude. Transcribes physician orders and creates and maintains the medical record. Registers, admits and/or discharges Labor and Delivery patients. Schedules patient care services. Performs a variety of functions which impact the Labor and Delivery coding and billing process. Is a key member of the care Labor and Delivery team.


Duties and Responsibilities:

1 Coordinates the scheduling process between physician offices and the charge nurse for planned surgical procedures.
2 Performs the following functions to register patients, both pre-registered and non-registered. Conducts patient interview to collect accurate financial, biographic and demographic information for Labor and Delivery admissions and/or registrations. Obtains signatures on financial waivers and treatment consent and authorization documentation. Scans insurance and ID cards into patients financial record.
3 Greets, directs and assists patients, visitors, physicians and ancillary department staff. Orients patients to their rooms as appropriate.
4 Answers telephone using personable etiquette. Answers inquiries by providing accurate information or forwarding callers to appropriate resource. Responds to intercom and email. Identifies emergency messages, directs information to the appropriate personnel. Maintains confidentiality.
5 Enters and/or retrieves data from established computer files using knowledge of carious computer applications designed for functions such as patient management, patient census, registration, billing, bed tracking, etc. Serve as a knowledgeable resource for multiple applications Eclipsys, Millennium PowerChart Maternity, and Promise. Keeps current with system application upgrades and changes. Offers/provides assistance to others in navigation.
6 Performs a variety of duties related to the creation and maintenance of the patient medical record in a manner which expedites registration, admission, discharge, transfer, etc. Assembles and copies charts and forms, ensuring charts contain necessary forms. Ensures all medical records have signed orders and an H & P. Places transcribed orders on the chart. Monitors and flags missing items daily. Performs data entry, chart preparation and teardown, filing and photocopying in accordance with the appropriate policies.
7 Coordinates testing, procedures and other patient services. Confers with clinical care providers regarding sequencing of diagnostic testing, patient activity tolerance and special needs.
8 Consults with appropriate clinical/nonclinical personnel to resolve issues, concerns from patients medical record, ancillary department results, patient/family inquiries, etc.
9 Communicates delays/difficulties in providing services or alteration of routine. Acknowledges and responds to patient alarms and notifies appropriate care provider.
10 Communicates changes in the patients condition and other urgent information to the Registered Nurse in a timely manner. Reports actual and potential problems concerning patients, families, staff and appropriate departments to the team members and the charge nurse/nurse manager.
11 Orders and stocks supplies on an ongoing basis.
12 Pages and/or calls consulting physicians, other departments and/or floors to arrange clinical staffs communication and care regarding a patient.
13 Assists with care maintenance of department equipment, hardware and supplies.


Department Description:

York Hospital Emergency Registration is a patient centered, customer service driven team stationed in the emergency department of York Hospital.  The main focus of the department is to assist with administrative needs. Given the unpredictable flow of the department, the ability to multi-task and adapt to constant change is essential.
