The position is located on the Behavioral Health Emergency Department (BH/ ED) Suite which is a 6 to 8 bed unit and separate from the York Hospital ED department. This position may also work on the Adult Inpatient Behavioral Health unit at York Hospital.

When a patient is medically cleared from the ED, they will receive psychiatric care from the BH / ED care team, which includes a multidisciplinary; psychiatrist, clinician, activity therapist and nursing care. This Trauma Informed Care team works collaboratively with the patient toward a successful discharge plan.

Job Description:

Under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager, provides professional behavioral health emergency nursing care at the intermediate practitioner level in accordance with the principles of patient and family-centered care based on the nursing process and according to the clinical standards of the hospital. Acts as a primary nurse for behavioral health patients on the unit. Coordinates care planning with other disciplines. May require specialized skills depending on unit assignment.


General Summary:

Under the direct supervision of the nurse manager/designee, and in concert with other team members, this staff works collaboratively to facilitate a stable and smooth operation of the unit and provides therapeutic interventions in accordance with best practice guidelines, care plans and policies.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Coordinates and monitors the activities of the individual’s plan of care.
  2. Performs all duties and responsibilities of the nursing assistant job description.  
  3. Provides direct care to patients primarily assisting with behavioral symptom management techniques and to assist patients in adapting to and/or coping with internal and external stresses.
  4. Provides assistance to the care team in development of and updating the care plan and discharge planning.
  5. Promotes patient attendance and participation in activities and documents participation.
  6. Provides practical help and side-by-side coaching, problems solving, training, and assistance to help patients with their activities of daily living and concerns.
  7. Provides direct care to patients in a manner that considers safety, comfort, and the therapeutic environment.
  8. Assists the team members in the care and needs of the patients.
  9. Assists with performance improvement measures and improving outcomes.



  •   Minimum Education: High school diploma             
  •   Minimum Experience:1 – 2 years
  •   Req Cert/Registration CPR certification
  •   Pref Cert/Registration Nursing Assistant certification
  • Working Conditions Clinical and normal office environment
  • Occasional exposure to personal harm/injury
  • Skills: Excellent human relations and oral/written communication skills; analytical skills, organization and time management; mental and visual ability to observe patient behavior and document findings; teaching ability; excellent customer service.
