Nurse Extern Program 2023

 

  • Program dates: June 5 – August 5
  • Extern Orientation:  June 6 – 9
  • 1st Unit Rotation – June 11 – July 8
  • 2nd Unit Rotation – July 9 – August 5
  • 9- week program
  • 8- week preceptor clinical experience (2, 4- week rotations)
  • 4- day hospital orientation
  • 1:1 experienced RN preceptor.
  • 36 hours per week (Day, evenings and nights - including weekends and holidays (will follow preceptor schedule)
  • Paid clinical experience
  • PA Child Abuse & FBI fingerprint clearances required
  • At completion of program, students may have the ability to continue employment in a Nursing Assistant capacity by working a minimum of 12 hours per month 
  • Optional - can take up to 36 hours/ 1 week off during program (unpaid)

 

 

WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital is a non-profit health services organization providing preventative services, primary care, diagnostic services, acute care and rehabilitation services to the residents of northern Lancaster County and surrounding communities. The hospital is licensed to accommodate 122 acute care patients and eight acute rehabilitation patients.

Independently developed more than 65 years ago to serve local needs, the WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital’s primary purpose is to assure community access to health care that is high in quality, compassionate and cost-effective. In cooperation with a qualified and diversified medical staff, the hospital attends to the personal needs of all patients with courtesy, efficiency and professionalism.

WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital is noted for its distinct ability to combine medical technology with the friendly, personalized care the community has come to expect from physicians and Hospital staff alike.

Offering a full range of inpatient and outpatient services, the Hospital strives to meet the needs of its community. Inpatient services include medical/surgical care, critical care, maternity care, pediatric care and behavioral health care.

Outpatient services range from comprehensive diagnostic testing to emergency care facilities, a cancer care center, and rehabilitative services. Other services available include an active wellness program, a women's health services center, a home healthcare program, and medical equipment retail stores.

 

 

Job Description:

Under supervision of the registered nurse, and as a fully functioning member of the patient care team, provides direct care to patients by performing a variety of duties, including assisting with data collection, provision of care, completion of selected therapeutic interventions, and documentation of care provided for a specified group of patients.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provides information needed by the registered nurse to coordinate the care and discharge planning for the patient and family.
  2. Provides general nursing care and personal care assistance to patients, including bathing, dressing, eating, changing bed linens and bed pans and positioning.
  3. Assists in the preparation and transportation of patients for tests, procedures, etc.
  4. Monitors patient condition levels; reports changes to the appropriate individuals.
  5. Obtains and documents patient vital signs, including temperature, blood pressure, weight, respiration, pulse, pain, and department-specific requirements.
  6. Performs selected procedures if demonstrated competency during formal Nurse Extern Program (If Nurse Extern Program completed at medical facility other than York Hospital, skills checklist/competency verification must be provided), such as catheterization, nasogastric tube insertion and care, wound care, administration of tube feedings, enema administration and ostomy care.
  7. Sets up and removes equipment and supplies; ensures equipment is functioning properly and stored appropriately.
  8. Performs EKGs and Point-of-Care testing which may include blood glucose, hemoccult and specific gravity testing.
  9. Runs special errands as required. Responds to light calls.
  10. Ensures patient rooms, nursing areas, supply carts, etc. are stocked with appropriate items at required levels.
  11. Maintains par levels of supplies and equipment on assigned unit(s). Notifies supervisor when reorder points are reached.

 

Must meet the following criteria:

o Currently enrolled in an accredited BSN, ADN, or diploma program

o Must be in senior year; graduating December 2023 or Spring 2024

 

Must submit the following as an attachment in addition to the online application:
