General Summary:

The Mental Health Care Educator aids in planning, developing, and presenting training programs provided to WellSpan staff and community partners.  Maintains contacts with various community organizations and groups to promote partnerships in learning.  Responsible for maintaining records of attendance and issuing certifications for continuing education credits.


Duties and Responsibilities:

   1 Develops curriculum and presentation materials demonstrating mastery of Mental Health First Aid, Therapeutic Crisis intervention and other health and wellness related topics as assigned.

   2  Develops materials supporting adult learning needs and teaching principles, and other age groups as appropriate.

   3  Utilizes teaching, observation, and assessment skills to orient, instruct and monitor staff competencies in Mental Health First Aid, TCI, or other assigned curriculums.

   4  Provides effective feedback, coaching, mentoring, and evaluation to assist in professional development of staff related to clinical understanding of mental health and role of caregivers.

   5  Sets up schedules of classes in adequate number and appropriate times as necessary to complete required training of all new hires and WellSpan Philhaven direct caregivers in assigned training areas.

   6  Obtains materials such as books, handouts, certificates of attendance, tests, etc. and equipment for each training program.

   7  Processes required paperwork to outside agency for issuing of certification cards.

   8  Coordinates the preparation and distribution of educational packets and prepares PowerPoint presentations.

   9  Assists in review and revision process of the educational and training materials.

  10  Assists in making video productions of training sessions as directed.

  11  Enters information into LMS or similar software system to record attendance as training.

  12  Generates reports regarding compliance with mandatory training.

  • Interpersonal and management skills
  • Physical ability to work freely throughout WellSpan Philhaven programs and facilities and to teach classes in passive restraint, respond to behavioral emergencies as needed.
  • Minimal lifting of audiovisual equipment is needed. 
  • Participation in activities that require a moderate degree of coordination and strength is required
  • Good leadership, motivational, coaching, interpersonal, and client management skills
  • Active listening skills
  • Analytical skills and ability to gather and interpret data and determine educational needs and safety concerns within WellSpan Philhaven programs, and find ways to satisfy those needs as well as to perceive how a given program will fit into the total mission of WellSpan Philhaven and be marketable to the target audience
  • Audiovisual technical ability to manage audiovisual equipment, including: Videotape player, overhead projector, and video projector; Visual ability to review and prepare written material
  • Ability to collaborate with professional and administrative groups in developing and evaluating educational programs
  • Moderate word processing skills, database searching skills, and other computerized programs. 
  • Ability to use normal office equipment
  • Knowledge and competency in working with children, adolescents, adult and geriatric populations.
Required Experience
  • Master's degree preferred
  • Must possess a valid driver's license in the current state of residence. Driving record must meet requirements established by WellSpan Risk Management
  • 2 years conducting training in a mental health setting
  • 3 years in mental health setting with children, adolescents, and adults
