Massage Therapist

General Summary

Performs massage therapy and bodywork treatments to patients and clients according to the principles and practices of massage therapy and works collaboratively with other departments to care for patient.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Performs soft tissue manipulation which may include but is not limited to effleurage, petrissage, tapotement, compression, vibration, friction, nerve strokes, and other Swedish Movements, either by hand or with mechanical or electrical apparatus, for the purpose of body massage. This may include the use of oil, lotion, salt glows, hot and cold packs, and other recognized forms of massage therapy.
  • Massage Therapists apply a system of structured touch, pressure, movement, holding and treatment of the soft tissue manifestations of the human body while the primary intent is to enhance the health and well-being of the patient. This includes lymphatic techniques, myofascial release and the use of electro-mechanical devices which mimic or enhance the action of the massage techniques.
  • Provides education and information to clients, co-workers, employer and community groups on the benefits of massage and other holistic and complementary medicine services available through the Center for Mind/Body Health.
  • Participates in marketing and community events as requested.
  • Provides supervision of externship students in Massage Therapy Programs with schools credentialed with WellSpan Health and acts as a role model to those students.
  • Participates in programs across the continuum of WellSpan health to provide patients access to the beneficial elements of holistic and complementary medicine services and to promote overall healing and good health.
  • Maintains patient/client records, as required by profession, with accurate and timely documentation in the health record per System/Department policy.

Common Expectations:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the lifespan of the assigned patient population. Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment. Provides direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s).
  • Provides recognized and approved techniques using equipment and products only if the massage therapist has the necessary knowledge, training or skill to competently execute the technique.
  • Provides treatments only where there is an expectation that it will be advantageous to the patient and will refer to an appropriate health care professional when indicated in the interest of the patient.
  • When treating minor patients, follows WSH policies and procedures of requiring that a parent or guardian be present in the treatment room during procedure.
  • Maintains patient record, as required by profession, with accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical health record.
  • Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Maintains current licensure in the State of Pennsylvania and adheres to all standards of professional conduct in keeping license current including continuing education hours and maintenance of certificates of completion.
  • Displays current PA Massage Therapy license with an expiration date in a conspicuous location.
  • Maintain patient dignity at all times.
  • Follows all WSH policies and procedures and complies with Provider Code of Conduct.
  • Maintains professional appearance standards of dress at all times including wearing WSH identification badge.
  • Ensures professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops.
  • Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation. Works with Practice Manager and support staff to resolve any customer service issues that may arise.
  • Maintains and cares for equipment and supplies. Reports and/or documents maintenance needs and repairs.
  • Maintains appropriate records, reports, and files as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

  • None Required

Work Experience:

  • 1 year Relevant experience. Required

Licenses:

  • Licensed Massage Therapist Upon Hire Required and
  • Basic Life Support Upon Hire Required

Courses and Training:

  • 500 hour professional massage therapy training program. Upon Hire Required and
  • Must have passed the National Certification exam. Upon Hire Required
