Position Summary:

General Summary:

Assists the Charge Nurse by providing management of the milieu to ensure smooth operation of the unit; the safety of patients, visitors, and staff; and therapeutic interventions in accordance with patient treatment plans and hospital policies.  Supervises and mentors the Psychiatric Assistant I and Psychiatric Behavioral Assistant staff assigned to the same shift.


Duties and Responsibilities:

1 Works with milieu staff, in collaboration with the Charge Nurse, to develop and implement plans which address the needs of the patients and the milieu.

2 Organizes unit tasks and makes staff assignments for the shift.

3 Keeps the Charge Nurse apprised of developing milieu issues, and collaborates in deciding on a course of intervention. 

4 Connects with the Lead PAs from both the previous and subsequent shift to facilitate communication of pertinent milieu management issues.

5 Oversees the orientation of new PA I’s by completing orientation tasks or assigning orientation tasks to a PA II.

6 Identifies and reports unsafe conditions in the milieu.

7 Manages behavioral crises under the direction of an RN including 1:1 observation, redirection, physical restraint and team crisis intervention



Required Skills

Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience and competence in behavioral health or social sciences required


Minimum of one year direct care experience in mental health field with satisfactory or above job performance evaluations. 


Valid PA Driver's license and qualify for WellSpan driving privileges


Completed training in TCI with demonstrated understanding of behavior therapy and behavior modification.
