Laboratory Technician III-(Histo/Cyto Prep Tech) Part Time - 40 hours Bi-Weekly

Position Summary:

 

 

General Summary:

 

 

Under the direct supervision of the Histology Laboratory Team Lead or Division Manager, perform a variety of technical and general duties at a basic skill & knowledge level.

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

 

   1 Precisely and accurately perform a variety of routine and specialized Histology and Cytology techniques in concurrence with established laboratory policies and procedures.

   2  Responsible for receiving, accessioning, and processing Histology and Cytology specimens.

   3  Assist Pathologist with preparing surgical specimens for processing.

   4  Perform equipment maintenance, reagent recycling/reclamation and efficient use of the pathology laboratory information system and specimen tracking system.

   5  Demonstrates a commitment to patient, visitor and staff by: complying with all applicable safety regulations; learning the impact of medical errors and methodology that will lead to reduction of errors; reporting actual and           potential errors, as well as hazardous conditions; identifying opportunities to standardize processes and "error proof" systems that will lead to increased safety; and participating in safety education programs and root cause   analyses as required.

   6  Adheres to established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

   7  Participates in educational programs and in service meetings.

   8  Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.

  9  Prepares solutions, reagents, etc. used for testing purposes.

 10  Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies.

 11  Attends meetings as required, and participates on committees as requested.

 12 Performs other related duties as identified.

Required Skills

 

 

Qualifications:

 

  Note:                              Other combinations of formal education, training and experience may be considered.

 

  Minimum Education            High School or G.E.D.

                                        

  Preferred Experience           1 - 2 years of hospital lab setting

                                        

  Physical Demands               Heavy physical effort (lift/carry 26 to 50 lbs)

                                                 Frequent prolonged standing/walking

                                                 Lifts supplies/equipment

                                                 Manual dexterity and mobility

                                                 Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching

 

 

Working Conditions     Exposed to infection from disease-bearing specimens

                                       Exposed to hazards of handling diseased organs and tissues

                                       Exposed to odorous chemicals/specimens

                                       Exposed to housekeeping/cleaning agents/chemicals

                                       Subject to hazards of flammable liquids

                                       Travel required for training

                                       Exposed to the risk of bloodborne diseases
