Job Description:

Under the direct supervision of the Outpatient Nurse Manager, functions as part of the management team, performing a variety of clinical and administrative duties related to clinical staff management and patient care. Duties may include quality monitoring, direct patient care, and patient/caregiver/staff education. Provides safe, therapeutic, efficient quality care and services to all patients served. May be responsible for the clinical functions of more than one practice with the oversight of clinical support staff. Develops a good collaborative, professional relationship that enhances each of their respective functions and promotes improved outcomes and clinical efficiencies.


Duties and Responsibilities


  1. Maintains a safe environment for both patients and employees by managing internal office functions related to clinical care and quality monitoring. This may include ensuring that medical equipment and supplies are readily available and are monitored for safety and quality control. Ensures the required documentation of quality control inspections are completed, which may include documentation of temperature readings, expiration date assessment, and the maintenance of emergency supplies and equipment.
  2. In consultation with the Outpatient Nurse Manager, assigns and delegates tasks to the clinical support staff.
  3. Ensures an efficient day-to-day clinical workflow within the practice. Assures staff function in accordance with standard workflow procedures.
  4. Ensures compliance with regulatory agencies and ensures environmentally safe practices are in place.
  5. Assists to develop clinical policies and procedures. Assists in monitoring and evaluation of quality assessment activities, including chart audits to monitor documentation compliance.
  6. Attends meetings and clinical competency training sessions as needed. Communicates regularly with staff to ensure pertinent and timely exchange of information.
  7. Follows recommended processes to appropriately manage and document patient concerns and quality of care issues including application of Just Culture principles.
  8. Applies Lean principles and identifies opportunities for Process Improvement. Provides leadership in striving to achieve excellence in clinical practice.
  9. Performs all responsibilities of the clinical support staff role.
  10. Monitors ECRI notices and completes necessary follow-up.
  11. Monitors staff completion of clinical tasks and documentation within the patient electronic medical record and MyWellspan patient portal.
  12. Monitors staff compliance, application of competencies, and completes annual performance evaluations.
  13. Ensures appropriate training of staff on new equipment, procedures, and best practices.
  14. Coordinates the clinical training and orientation of new/floater staff. Assigns preceptor, when applicable.
  15. Prepares agendas and holds regular clinical staff meetings.
  16. Assists the providers and the Care Coordination Team to manage the care of patients according to their risk, and to assist in identifying patients in need of Case Management.
  17. Works with leadership to deliver patient care through practice integration of multidisciplinary clinical and centralized services.
  18. Assists team to identify opportunities for improvement related to the patient experience metrics. Coaches staff on measures to use to provide an excellent patient experience, for every patient, on every visit, every day.
  19. Assists and educates clinical staff on when and how to enter Safety Reporting System (SRS) events, and Customer Reporting System (CRS) complaints and compliments.
  20. Adheres to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996

Common Expectations:

  1. Supervises clinical staff by training, allocating and monitoring work. Prepares work schedules of clinical staff; approves/disapproves scheduled time off.
  2. Assists Manager with interviewing, hiring, orienting, training and retention of clinical staff. Evaluates performance of designated clinical staff.
  3. Coordinates continuing education of clinical staff and assures clinical competencies are met, documented, and maintained.
  4. Trains, mentors, and coordinates preceptorship of new clinical staff. Strives for a high level of employee satisfaction and engagement and is seen as a positive role model for all staff.
  5. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient population. Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment. Provides direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s).
  6. Demonstrates a commitment to patient, visitor and staff by: complying with all applicable safety regulations; learning the impact of medical errors and methodology that will lead to reduction of errors; reporting actual and potential errors, as well as hazardous conditions; identifying opportunities to standardize processes and "error proof" systems that will lead to increased safety; and participating in safety education programs and root cause analyses as required.
  7. Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  8. Maintains professional growth and development.
  9. Performs the duties of a Behavioral Health Clinical Assistant, such as obtaining vital signs, patient rooming, medication prior authorizations, and other required documentation.
  10. Keeps up to date with new technologies and applies knowledge to the job.
  11. Keeps abreast of new developments by attending meetings and/or workshops as appropriate.
  12. Operates standard office machines and equipment such as computers, calculators, and photocopiers.
  13. Assists with clerical duties as needed, such as scheduling of appointments, completion of patient forms, processing faxes, and paperwork
  14. Travel to various locations and offices for provider coverage, as needed.



  • Minimum Experience:
    • 3 - 5 years of previous clinical nursing experience; previous office and supervisory experience preferred
  • Minimum Education:
    • Certificate of completion (degree or diploma) from an accredited LPN program
  • Minimum Field Of Expertise:
    • Highly experienced Licensed Practical Nurse
  • Required Certification:
    • Licensed practical nurse; Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Required Courses:
    • Nursing. Requires good clinical knowledge base, knowing when and how to obtain necessary or additional clinical knowledge.
  • Skills:
    • Excellent interpersonal/communications skills; Models teamwork; Self-motivated and able to work independently.
    • Must possess a valid driver’s license in the current state of residence; driving record must meet requirements established by WellSpan Risk Management. If required to work remotely, must have reliable home internet and a HIPPA compliant workspace.
