Position Summary:

General Summary:



Under general supervision, serves as personnel, project and program manager.  Manages and oversees a diverse research program of services, education and related health system entities.   Must have a broad view and understanding of research laboratory and program goals.  Responds to program problems with insight, creativity and tact.  Plans for contingencies that could affect the program.  Serves as a senior non-medical representative of the program and acts as a mentor for research staff, students, physicians/nurses and other clinicians.   Monitors adherence to research and laboratory regulations, institutional policies and procedures, and insures the responsible conduct of research.



Duties and Responsibilities:


The following are essential job accountabilities:


   1   Designs, implements and manages a system for planning, organizing and controlling work flow related to appropriate research services and program activities.


   2   Assists research staff, physicians and/or other investigators in evaluating compliance with requirements of protocols, research and/or laboratory regulations, quality standards and policies and procedures.  Initiates corrective action as needed.  Suggests improved methods for accomplishing research and/or laboratory objectives, including the responsible conduct of research and protection of the safety and welfare of human subjects.


   3   Assists principal investigators in preparing research protocols and consent forms and submitting required materials to the Institutional Review Board for pre-implementation review.  Coordinates the development and preparation of grant proposals to secure research funding.


   4   Prepares statistical reports on study progress as required by research administration, principal investigators and/or external agencies.  Responds to special needs or queries related to research projects/programs.


   5   Supervises and coordinates technical functions, activities and services in assigned areas


   6   Manages daily operations, including the equipping, maintenance and security of research laboratories and computer network(s) and peripheral system devices, and presentation/publication processes and technology.   Troubleshoots component/system malfunctions.  Develops contingency plans and back-up systems.


   7   Coordinates and integrates technology and technical services within assigned areas and other departments/service lines/entities, as well as with the System's primary functions.  Participates in the selection of outside services (if needed).


   8   Oversees the quality/performance improvement process for assigned areas to ensure maximum operational efficiency.


   9   Performs surveys and comparative analyses of work units; investigates new technology, equipment, techniques, and methodologies; recommends, implements, demonstrates and provides training, as appropriate or required.


10   Guides research staff and investigators in defining information and plans required to accomplish research studies.  Designs and creates data collection forms/systems.  Assists investigators with special requests for data retrieval on clinical research studies.


11   Directs documentation, establishes record system, and maintains laboratory records, reports, statistics, logs, and files, in print and electronic form as appropriate.  Insures only authorized personnel have access to confidential data/records/information.   Reports any security breach immediately.


12 Instructs and works collaboratively with physicians, residents and others in the planning and completion of in-vivo/in-vitro laboratory experiments and clinical studies.

Required Skills

Minimum Education:


Bachelor's Degree in health related field




Preferred Education:              


Master’s Degree or higher




Minimum Experience:            


3 - 5 years in relevant medical research





Min Field of Expertise:           


Laboratory, project and personnel management, research training/experience including medical/research ethics and human subject’s protection, laboratory accreditation standards, responsible conduct of research and scientific writing




Required Cert/Registration:


National Certification in area of specialty
