General Summary

Performs patient care activities, skilled tasks, and prescribed procedures in the care of patients, under the direction of a licensed professional nurse.

Essential Functions:

  • Checks patient's vital signs.
  • Prepares and initiates IV and normal saline locks.
  • Performs 12-lead electrocardiography. Possesses the ability to recognize abnormal cardiac rhythms.
  • Performs venipuncture for the purpose of obtaining blood specimens.
  • Inserts urinary catheter, gastric tubes. Performs gastric suctioning.
  • Cares for patients by assisting them with feeding, bathing, shaving, dressing/undressing and toileting. Assists patients into/out of bed, with standing or walking/crutch walking.
  • Lifts, moves and positions patients.
  • Restrains/holds patients as directed. Assists in the application of physical restraints.
  • Prepares patients for procedures.
  • Administers oxygen by mask or cannula. Performs airway suctioning.
  • Applies heat/cold, non-sterile and sterile dressings, support hose, ace bandages, and casts/splints (under the direct supervision of nurse/physician).
  • Applies and discontinues traction and other orthopedic equipment.

Common Expectations:

  • Prepares and maintains written documentation as required by the profession and the department.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient population. Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment. Provides direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s).
  • Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.
  • Participates in educational programs and in-service meetings.
  • Performs scribe function as needed.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED Required

Work Experience:

  • 3 years Relevant experience. Required

Licenses:

  • Certified Emergency Medical Technician Upon Hire Required and
  • Certified Paramedic Upon Hire Required and
  • Heartsaver CPR/AED Upon Hire Required and
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Upon Hire Required and
  • Ped Adv Life Support Upon Hire Required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Able to use the following equipment: Patient lifting devices, Bedrails, Specialty bed, Non-invasive blood pressure monitor, Cardiorespiratory monitor, Sequential compression device, Continuous passive motion device, K-pad, Pulse oximetry.
