Position Summary:

General Summary:

Under general supervision, plans and supervises the day-to-day operation and organization of the Electroconvulsive Therapy program for inpatient and outpatient Behavioral Health.  Performs procedural interventional support as directed by the Anesthesiologist and Psychiatrist.  Provides care, assessment and pre-procedural instruction and care to patients.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  1. Acts as an assistant to the physician during procedures and prepares or supervises the preparation of supplies and equipment necessary for procedures.  Is familiar with variations in the preparations for different procedures, settings and/or physicians
  2. Demonstrates proficiency in ECT therapy and maintenance techniques.
  3. Administers medications as ordered by the physician.
  4. Provides emergency care as indicated and supported by protocols, training and experience.
  5. Maintains ECT Database; creates a daily schedule of treatments; enters the schedule per system requirements.
  6. Coordinates outpatient referrals and schedules outpatient evaluations.
  7. Initiates ECT treatment plans and completes patient education as required.
  8. Monitors treatments precertification status and submits requests to Utilization Management.
  9. Collects and monitors ECT metrics as required.
  10. Coordinates follow up appointments for outpatients undergoing a series of treatments.
  11. Liaises with the Short Stay Unit, PHAS, Utilization Management, outpatient providers and patients and families.
  12. Monitors H&P, Treatment Consent and Anesthesia Consent to ensure compliance.
  13. Coordinates ECT services daily with the Medical Director.


Department Description:

Inpatient Behavioral Health (BHS) at York Hospital is a very diverse 63 bed acute care unit, serving patients 18 and older with a variety of mental health diagnoses and medical comorbidities with a primary focus on crisis stabilization.  We are one department that has 4 units (A, B, C and D), each having a different level of care and acuity.  Patients are admitted as either a 201 (Voluntary) or 302 (Involuntary) with an average length of stay of 7 days, with some patients staying longer and others staying fewer days.  BHS has a strong collaborative team made up of Psychiatrists, Medical Doctors, Nurses, Social Workers, Therapists, Psychiatric Technicians and Unit Secretaries that work as a team to provide exceptional patient care, along with our consult team which provides support services for all of York Hospital.  If your passion is Psychiatric nursing, come join our team!

Required Experience
  • Minimum Education- Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • Minimum Experience- 3 to 5 years experience as a Clinical Nurse II level and Behavioral Health experience
  • Registration and current RN license in PA
  • Psychiatric Nurse Board Certification
