General Summary:


Under the general supervision of the Vice President-Operations, manages the housekeeping department. Establishes policies, procedures, objectives and work standards. Maintains quality control and compliance with regulatory requirements.  Plays a significant role in preventing/controlling the spread of infectious agents throughout the facility.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Plans, organizes, directs, coordinates and supervises functions and activities of the housekeeping department to maintain the hospital environment in a sanitary, attractive and orderly condition and comply with regulatory requirements. Plays a significant role in preventing/controlling the spread of infectious agents throughout the facility.
  • Inspects and evaluates the hospital's physical condition. Makes recommendations concerning painting, repairs, furnishings and furniture, relocation of equipment and allocation of space to improve sanitation, appearances and efficiency.
  • Provides essential equipment and supplies and ensures that cleaning agents/housekeeping chemicals meet required standards to effect maximum cleanliness and sanitation.
  • Investigates and evaluates new housekeeping supplies and equipment and makes recommendations to administration.
  • Contributes towards the efficiency of the patient admission/discharge process.
  • Recommends staffing levels, selects and assigns staff, evaluates performance, evaluates/tests competencies (as applicable), provides orientation, training and continuing education of staff, and initiates or makes recommendations for personnel actions.
  • Coordinates and integrates services within the department/service line/entity, with other departments/service lines/entities, and with the System's primary functions. Participates in the selection of outside services (if needed).
  • Continuously assesses and improves the department/service line/entity/System's performance. Maintains appropriate quality control/assessment programs (if applicable).
  • Develops, establishes and implements goals, objectives, and policies and procedures for department/service line/entity operation, and which guide and support the provision of the department/service line/entity's services.
  • Develops and recommends department/entity operating budget and ensures that department/entity operates within budget.
  • Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.


Department Description:

The Housekeeping Department at York Hospital services over 500 patient rooms, professional offices and ancillary locations. We support various areas of the hospital such as, medical/surgical units, intensive care, labor & delivery, emergency services, and operating rooms. Our team works collaboratively to maintain a clean environment for patients, visitors and employees of WellSpan Health.
Required Skills
  • Batchelor's Degree
  • Master's Degree (preferred)
  • National Executive Housekeeping Association Certification
  • Completion of courses in housekeeping or institutional management (preferred)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Must effectively communicate with all levels of customers (leadership, physicians, staff, patients, etc.)
  • Excellent organizational skills that reflect ability to lead, prioritize work assignments and adapt new processes and/or techniques.
  • Strong customer service skills focused on gaining a full understanding of needs, providing quality solutions and follow-up as needed.
Required Experience
  • Minimum 5 years of management experience 
  • Experience in a health care setting is preferred
